Zálužice: Baroque architectural history and hotels
Accommodation in Zálužice
If you are planning a trip to Zálužice, historic buildings take center stage: Stekník Castle, the bridge over the Ohře, and chapels and farmsteads from different periods. Those who pay particular attention to architecture and local history when choosing a destination can explore the castle’s history, the protected village landscape, and agricultural architecture.
Stekník Castle and the village landscape
To this day, Stekník’s historic center has retained its original Baroque appearance. Stekník Castle makes its own architectural statement: it is one of the most significant Rococo buildings in Bohemia and is surrounded by an Italian-style terraced garden. Restored interiors of the castle are open to the public. The visitor tour presents the castle as it was during the time of its last private owners, the family of Swiss consul Gerold Déteindre.
Since the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Culture issued Decree No. 249/95 on September 22, 1995, Stekník has been a village conservation area. At the time, it was the only village conservation area in the former Louny District. This designation and the preserved Baroque village center give Stekník’s architectural history a clear framework.
Routes with different focuses
The historic walking route leads through the area around Stekník Castle and introduces the history of the village and the castle. It also explores notable figures and monuments of the region. The Cestou chmele route has a different focus: it leads through hop fields in the area of the Hop Research Institute. One route therefore focuses on local and castle history, notable figures, and monuments, while the other takes in the hop fields.
Bridge and religious buildings
The landmark of Zálužice is a three-span reinforced-concrete bridge over the Ohře. It was built in 1934 and extensively reconstructed in 2010 and 2011. With its three spans and reinforced-concrete construction, it is markedly different from the destination’s Baroque buildings.
A Baroque chapel dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk stands at the southern edge of Zálužice. It was altered in the 19th century. Its Baroque classification and later remodeling mark two distinct building phases.
Farmsteads and other monuments
At the edge of Zálužice, Farmstead No. 6 displays features of vernacular Baroque architecture. In Rybňany, opposite the local farmstead, a damaged Baroque statue of Saint Barbara dating from 1719 stands on a double plinth. Its date and condition make it a different record of local history from the preserved building ensembles.
A valuable agricultural complex has also been preserved in Rybňany. It includes residential buildings, a barn, a drying facility, stables, and a group of barns dating from the early 19th century. A conical icehouse is particularly striking and represents an exceptionally rare type of construction in the region. The different buildings make the complex’s agricultural architecture a distinct highlight alongside the castle, chapel, and bridge.
