Discover Podbořany
Accommodation in Podbořany
Podbořany offers several distinct themes to shape your travel plans: a museum in the former town hall, religious buildings from different periods, the Gothic water fortress Vodní tvrz Hlubany in Hlubany, and the archaeologically significant Vrch Rubín. There is also a municipal circular cycling route via Kryry and Vroutek. You can therefore plan your stay around cultural history, architecture, archaeology or a specific bike ride.
Museum and regional history
The Muzeum Podbořany is located at Dukelská 1 in the former town hall. The building’s present-day Baroque appearance dates from 1751. The exhibition “Hlasy Čechů z Volyně” explores the history of the Czech community in Volhynia. It spans the community’s emigration from Austria-Hungary to the Russian Empire of the time, its return to Czechoslovakia and later developments. Accompanying texts, maps, numerous photographs and eyewitness recollections present the subject from different perspectives.
Another exhibition, “Geologie na Podbořansku,” features a fossilised horsetail tree trunk discovered in the Podbořansko region. The two exhibitions focus on different subjects: one is devoted to a community and its history, while the other centres on a specific find from the region.
Churches from different periods
Kostel sv. Petra a Pavla is a single-nave Roman Catholic church in the Late Baroque style, built in 1781. Its tower is set into the west façade. “Single-nave” describes a single main space; together with its Late Baroque classification and the tower’s position, this gives a clear idea of the building’s design.
Kostel Božího Spasitele belongs to a later period: this pseudo-Romanesque church dates from the beginning of the 20th century and was consecrated on 9 November 1902. Pseudo-Romanesque describes later architecture that draws on Romanesque forms. Comparing the two churches reveals different building periods and styles.
Vrch Rubín and its long history of settlement
Vrch Rubín broadens the perspective from architectural history to archaeological timescales. The hill was inhabited for almost 4,000 years, from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. Rubín is considered one of the most significant archaeological sites in Northwest Bohemia and has been protected as a significant landscape feature since 2 September 1993. While the museum exhibition focuses on a single find—the fossilised trunk—the long history of settlement shapes the way Vrch Rubín is understood.
Circular cycling route and swimming pool
The municipal route “Trasa A – Po stopách Schillera” is an 18.4-kilometre circular route from Podbořany via Kryry and Vroutek, returning to Podbořany. When planning the ride, both the stated distance and the circular route are relevant: Podbořany is the starting and finishing point, while Kryry and Vroutek are on the described route. The route therefore offers a clearly defined cycling option, while the museum, churches and Rubín each explore their own cultural and historical themes.
Městské koupaliště Podbořany has a 50-metre swimming pool and a children’s pool. If you are planning a visit for a swim, check in advance whether the facility will be open on your travel dates.
