When planning a stay in Peruc, you can consider the destination through different interests: marked hiking trails and nature on the one hand, and the history of the castle, churches and museum on the other. Specific differences between the trails, as well as the historic connections of the buildings, can help you decide. This makes it easier to weigh up which themes should take priority when planning your trip.

Choose hiking trails by route type

The Perucko educational trail is a circular route approximately 12.5 kilometres long. It starts and ends at the COOP supermarket on Komenského Street in Peruc. Twenty information boards share facts about the history, nature and sights of Peruc and the surrounding area. Its circular layout and fixed start and end point give the trail a different orientation from routes that run between different places. The walking time or difficulty cannot be determined from the distance alone.

Four marked hiking trails run through the municipality of Peruc: the red trail Peruc–Slavětín–Louny, the blue trail from Peruc railway station via Chrastín to Libochovice, the yellow trail from Chrastín via Stradonice to Pátek railway station, and the Perucko educational trail. The destinations listed provide a concrete basis for matching the direction of each route to your travel plans. While the educational trail is a circular route that returns to its starting point, the other trails are defined by their respective starting and ending points. Before setting out on a specific hike, check the route, trail markings and trail conditions.

Castle and church: two architectural histories

Peruc Castle was created in the Baroque period by converting a Gothic fortress. The three-winged building has three risalits—projecting sections that articulate its façades. Opposite the castle grounds, the single-nave parish church of St Peter and Paul stands on higher ground. Master builder E. Kondel built it in 1768–1769. The two buildings therefore make different architectural statements: at the castle, you can trace its transformation from a Gothic fortress into a Baroque building, while the church is distinguished by its single-nave layout and elevated position in the townscape.

The painter Emil Filla is also associated with the castle. From 1947 to 1953, he worked in part of the castle and painted mostly landscapes of the Bohemian Central Highlands. Fillova pamětní síň (Filla Memorial Hall) opened in the castle in 1958. His years of work and the later opening of the memorial hall are separate chapters in the castle’s history. If you would like to include the memorial hall in your visit, check in advance whether it is open to the public.

Museum and other features of the town

The Museum of Czech Village Life is housed in a former Baroque barn dating from 1876, in the castle park in Peruc. It can be reached through a gate on náměstí Emila Filly (Emil Filla Square). The exhibitions focus on rural everyday and working life. On display are agricultural machinery and ploughs, fire engines, and carts drawn by horses or oxen. There is also an exhibition on beekeeping and tools used in blacksmithing. This collection has a different focus from the castle’s architectural and artistic history, drawing attention instead to equipment, vehicles and craftwork.

Boženina Spring is in the centre of Peruc. It is fed by a spring that emerges from the rock below the castle; the spring has a masonry structure and is sheltered by a Neo-Gothic pavilion. By contrast, Oldřichův dub is a memorial tree on the outskirts of Peruc in the Louny District. There is a prepared resting place by the oak. The two places offer different natural and local features: a captured spring in the centre, and a memorial tree on the edge of town with a place to rest.
