Brody: Castle History and Cultural Landscape
Accommodation in Brody
Brody has several clearly distinct historical and landscape landmarks. The Baroque castle grounds lie north of the village; near the village center stands a column with a statue of Saint Barbara. Zámecký park Krásný Dvůr adds a distinct landscape dimension. This makes it possible to view local history, castle architecture and the cultural landscape as different facets of the destination.
Brody Between Local History and Castle History
Brody was first mentioned in writing in 1403, when it was part of Buškovice. After 1552, Jan Fremut the Younger built a Renaissance fortress in Brody. The Baroque castle grounds were established on the site of a 16th-century fortress. This sequence leads from the earliest written mention, through the Renaissance fortress, to the later history of the castle. If you are interested in how the village developed, it helps to view the first mention and the construction phases as distinct points in time: the year 1403 marks the village’s written history, while the fortress and castle mark its architectural history.
The Baroque castle has a chapel dedicated to Saint Barbara. At the same time, the castle grounds are classified as an ÚAN I archaeological area; the period covered extends from the Middle Ages to the modern era. This places the castle’s specific architecture alongside a broader historical timespan. Before visiting the chapel, check the local visitor information.
Another reference to Saint Barbara can be found near the village center: at a crossroads by a chapel stands a column with a statue of the saint. At the castle, Barbara is the dedicatee of a chapel; near the village center, she appears as a statue on a column. These two points of reference can be distinguished, even though they bear the same name.
Krásný Dvůr Park and Landscape
Zámecký park Krásný Dvůr lies on a slope above the Leskovský potok stream, between the castle and Brody. In terms of area, it is one of the largest English-style parks in Bohemia and includes romantic landscape structures. It is also registered as a significant landscape feature. Its hillside setting, the structures in the park and its designation as a landscape feature offer different ways to look at the designed landscape alongside the architectural history.
The park can be visited independently and without a guide all year round; admission is free. For planning purposes, this is a clear difference from the castle, whose chapel requires a separate access notice. Before your visit, check the local access information for the castle and park.
Nature is also among the themes of the Krásný Dvůr area: it is an important entomological area and a refuge for the hermit beetle (Osmoderma eremita). Its importance as a habitat is a different aspect from the park’s romantic landscape structures. This allows you to divide your trip into different themes: in Brody, the focus is on the written mention and the development of the fortress and castle; in the Krásný Dvůr landscape area, park design and entomological significance also come into play.
