Libočany offers a range of attractions for a stay focused on church art, local history and nature. All Saints’ Church combines distinctive exterior architecture with frescoes and an unusually designed organ. Historic buildings and the stories of notable figures add to the picture; the surrounding area is also home to a botanically valuable site and a floodplain landscape.

All Saints’ Church: Architecture, Frescoes and Organ

All Saints’ Church is a single-nave building with an ornate western façade and two towers. Its walls are built from roughly hewn sandstone blocks. They are laid in regular horizontal rows, with narrow bands of red sandstone between them. The façade thus brings together contrasting stone colors and a clear horizontal design. The interior also features a distinct artistic theme: the vaults are covered with frescoes depicting scenes from the lives of saints. They were painted by J. V. Tschopper.

The church’s furnishings include an organ with two manuals and thirteen stops. It is considered the first known organ design in the Czech Republic with five cases. This makes it notable both for its technical features and for its distinctive arrangement of cases. The church therefore offers several different points of interest for anyone exploring sacred architecture: the two-towered façade, the alternating sandstone courses, the vault paintings and the organ design.

Local History and Historic Buildings

The earliest records of Libočany date from 1226. At that time, the village belonged to the Doksany Monastery estate. This date marks the earliest written reference to the village; it should not be taken as its founding date. A later chapter in local history is associated with the cultural center: it was ceremonially opened on July 7, 1928, and built on the foundations of former brewery cellars.

The old granary, known as the Špýchar, is another distinctive historical landmark. It dates from 1602 and is a stone building with a Baroque gable. The granary still serves its original purpose. The historic forge, meanwhile, dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. These buildings represent different periods in the village’s history: from the early 17th-century granary to the forge and the 20th-century cultural center.

Several notable figures are also associated with Libočany. Václav Hájek z Libočan was born here. The music publisher E. Wetzler came from the village. The writer and first Czech female senator, Božena Viková-Kunětická (1862–1934), spent the last twelve years of her life in Libočany. Alongside its buildings, these stories give local history a literary and political dimension.
