Horní Jiřetín: Baroque Art, Jezeří Castle and Routes
Accommodation in Horní Jiřetín
Horní Jiřetín offers several different focal points for a stay: sacred Baroque art, the history of Jezeří Castle, and opportunities for cycling and walking. When planning your trip, it is worth choosing a focus based on whether you want to prioritize culture or activity. At the church, the furnishings, viewing terraces and sculptures take center stage; the routes differ in activity type, length and landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Horní Jiřetín, these interests can help you decide what kind of trip you want.
Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and Baroque Sculptures
The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has original and very valuable Baroque furnishings. A visit to the church also includes climbing to the viewing terraces on the main tower, from where you can see all of Jiřetín and the surrounding area. The church visit thus combines the interior furnishings with a view from the main tower.
The lower part of Horní Jiřetín is home to four valuable Baroque sculptures: the Calvary sculpture, the statue of Saint Lawrence, the sculptural group of Saint George, and the statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. All four were professionally restored over the past fifteen years and are protected as immovable cultural monuments. The equestrian statue of Saint George fighting a dragon is an early Baroque work dating from 1691 by Bernard Dörl. Thus, both the church furnishings and individual works with their own historical context are among the town’s cultural attractions.
Jezeří Castle: History and Visiting
Jezeří Castle developed from a 14th-century Gothic castle, first into a Renaissance castle and later into a Baroque one. This sequence highlights the different stages of its development: the Gothic castle was the starting point, followed later by the Renaissance and Baroque periods. If you are interested in architectural history, this progression offers a concrete way to explore the castle’s history.
The castle opened to the public in June 1996. If you are planning a visit today, please check the current opening arrangements separately.
Cycling and Walking Routes
The Horní Jiřetín–Jezeří cycling route is seven kilometers long, mostly easy, and suitable for mountain bikes and trekking bikes. There is a steeper climb at the end; take this section into account when assessing the route. Check local trail conditions before setting out.
The “Kolem dolu ČSA” route is also accessible from Horní Jiřetín. It runs through the reclaimed landscape of the former ČSA open-pit mine and is suitable for walkers and cyclists. Along the way, it offers views of the open-pit mine, the Ore Mountains and Jezeří Castle. Its stated length is nine kilometers; the shorter version described is about eight kilometers long. Reclamation is ongoing, so the landscape continues to be shaped by this process.
The routes therefore differ in more than just length: the connection to Jezeří is described as a cycling route, with information about suitable bicycle types and a steeper final climb. Kolem dolu ČSA is also suitable for walkers and passes through the reclaimed landscape. When comparing the distances, seven kilometers refers to the Horní Jiřetín–Jezeří cycling route; nine kilometers, or about eight kilometers, refers to Kolem dolu ČSA and its shorter version.
