Zbraslav: Cycling Route, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Zbraslav
Zbraslav combines a themed cycling route and a nature trail with river landscapes and local history. During your stay, you can focus on tours and natural attractions or on historic buildings and stone memorials. The information about the town offers different points of interest, from the river valley to the Church of St. Giles.
Cycling Route, Nature Trail and River Valley
Themed circular cycling route Hornická No. 5199 crosses the Zbraslav area. It runs from the Oslava Valley to Bílý potok through the former Rosicko-Oslavansko hard-coal mining district. As route operations may change, check the current route before planning a ride. The Zbraslav Nature Trail has a different focus: its seven information boards cover natural and historical attractions. Motýlí stráň, a natural attraction, is also located along the trail. The two routes therefore cover different topics: the cycling route also focuses on the former hard-coal mining district, while the nature trail features natural and historical attractions.
The floodplain of the Bílá voda River is designated as a significant landscape feature. The valley also contains significant spring areas within Level II water protection zones.
Church and Local History
The Church of St. Giles stands in the centre of Zbraslav. Its construction history begins with a Romanesque chapel dating from the 13th century. In the 14th century, it was extended into a Gothic church with the addition of a nave and tower. Remains of rib vaults have been preserved in the presbytery, or chancel, and in the sacristy. The first written mention of Zbraslav dates from 1222.
North of Zbraslav, in the Příčnice woodland near the road to Ludvíkov, stands an atonement memorial stone. Its relief depicts a Latin cross, and it also bears the date 1596. The original is kept in the municipality, while a copy stands at the original site. A second stone stele with a cross relief is located nearby. Thus, two stone markers with cross motifs can be distinguished there: the copy of the atonement memorial stone and the nearby stele.
Another stone wayside shrine stands at the corner of Školní and Komenského streets. It bears a relief of St. Wendelin and the date 1781. At the northeastern edge of the town, on the road towards Litostrov, stands the pedestal of a statue of St. John of Nepomuk. The original statue was stolen; a replica is in place. The Hradiště Zbraslav hillfort is also part of the town’s history: it contains remains of a former castle belonging to the nobleman Gerhard of Zbraslav, dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. The wayside shrine, statue pedestal and hillfort each represent a different kind of historical evidence.
Visiting and Seasonal Planning
You can visit the Karolína riding stable in Zbraslav. As visiting arrangements may change, check in advance what visits are possible. The Zbraslav ski area relies on natural snow, so its winter season, from December to March, depends on snow conditions. If skiing is the main focus of your trip, current snow conditions are essential for planning.
Zbraslav is served by IDS JMK bus services and has four bus stops. Check the current timetable for your specific journey, as services and stop locations may change.
