Svetla: Manor history and village life
Accommodation in Svetla
When looking for hotels in Svetla, learning what makes the village distinctive can help you decide where to travel. Světlá combines preserved rural architecture with regular local events.
The manor and the history of rural architecture
The former manor is an important landmark in the village’s history. The abbot of Hradisko Monastery founded it in 1563; it was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1721. Several of the manor’s buildings have been preserved. The two dates mark distinct phases: its foundation in the 16th century was followed by a Baroque remodelling.
A group of 18th-century timber barns adds another dimension to this architectural history. There are also several farmsteads dating from around the turn of the 20th century. The timeline thus stretches from the former manor, through the barns, to the farmsteads dating from around 1900. If you are interested in rural architecture, you will encounter buildings from distinctly different periods in Světlá.
Chapel, monuments and landmarks
The Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary marks another period: it dates from 1872 and was reconstructed in 1996. The monument to Emperor Franz Joseph I was reconstructed and then put back in the village. The restoration of the monument to František Palacký in the 1970s is part of the village’s history; it was carried out by a local resident. The chapel and monuments thus bring together religious architectural history and memories of historical figures.
Another specific landmark is the “Starý kříž” (“Old Cross”): it stands beside a field track about 250 m west of and below Světlá. This description locates the individual cross without equating it with the buildings in the village.
Local activities and walks
Alongside the preserved buildings, recurring activities are part of village life. The “Běh Světlou” run is one of the regular local events. Fish harvests take place regularly at the ponds behind the municipal office and in the centre of Světlá. This named run and the activities at the ponds add further aspects of local life to the village’s historic character.
The surrounding forests invite long walks and offer mushrooms and wild berries. This connection with nature provides a different focus from the village’s architectural history. When choosing where to stay, you can therefore weigh up whether the preserved buildings, local life or walks in the surrounding area matter most to you.
