Bukovina combines tangible evidence of local history with a forested, hilly landscape. The village lies in the gently rolling terrain of the Drahanská vrchovina and is surrounded by forests on all sides. Different points of interest can be combined when planning a trip: historic sites in the village, viewpoints and trails nearby, and recurring events.

Cultural Monuments and Local History

A statue of Saint Wenceslas stands in the village square. It was erected in 1924 as a memorial to eleven residents who fell in the First World War. The monument connects the square with a specific chapter of the village’s history.

Another trace of history is the bell, which was acquired in 1833. It still hangs in the bell tower and is listed as a cultural monument. The 1924 monument and the older bell thus represent two distinct historical landmarks in the village.

The protected Boží muka are also a distinctive structure. They stand on a rise next to the Agos Bio agricultural business. This unusual two-storey structure has a triangular floor plan and a gabled roof topped by a cross of Saints Cyril and Methodius. Each storey has three image niches. Its floor plan, design and niches give the structure a distinctive architectural form.

Hills, Forest and Views

Forests surround Bukovina on all sides, and the surrounding terrain is gently hilly. Proklest Mountain, which reaches an elevation of 574 metres, lies nearby to the north of the village. There are viewpoints along the forest edge beside the trail, overlooking the surrounding countryside. This makes the area’s landscape a different point of reference from the historic landmarks in the village: here, elevation, forest edges and views take centre stage.

Trails and Seasonal Activities

The trails in the forests around Bukovina are suitable for cross-country skiing in winter and cycling trips in summer. Activities therefore also depend on the season, and trail conditions can vary. South of Bukovina, a red-marked hiking trail runs through forested areas from Křtiny to Bukovinka. Near Lhotky, a red-marked hiking trail connects to a blue-marked trail towards Ochoz. These markers and directions provide specific points of reference without specifying a walking time or difficulty level.

The southern starting or ending point of the Proklest forest road is near Bukovina. Nearby, the forest road has a paved surface and is considered suitable for road cyclists and families with strollers. Check current access conditions and seasonal trail conditions before planning your trip.

Events and When to Visit

Cultural events and fairs are held in the square around the monument to Saint Wenceslas; dates vary. Bukovina Day, “Den Bukoviny,” is a traditional event held every year in September. The local fire brigade also organises the youth competitions “Bukovinské štafetování” every year at the start of the school holidays.

Check the local dates for Bukovina Day and the youth competitions. For the trails, the season is the main practical point of reference: cross-country skiing is mentioned for winter and cycling trips for summer. So, if you want to plan your trip around an event or a particular activity, take both the relevant dates and trail conditions into account.
