Discover Bořitov: Church and Cultural History
Accommodation in Bořitov
Bořitov is a good choice for travelers who want to focus their stay on cultural history. The Kostel svatého Jiří church offers a connection to the earlier Romanesque period and to later phases of construction. Other points of interest include the archaeological traces at Malý Chlum and the sculpture group of Hussite fighters on Velký Chlum near Bořitov. Several historical themes come together here: church-building history, prehistoric settlement, and a restored sculpture ensemble.
Kostel svatého Jiří Church and Its Building History
Depending on the assessment, the construction of Kostel svatého Jiří church in Bořitov is dated to the late 12th or early 13th century and attributed to the earlier Romanesque period. According to the inscription on the cross, the tower bears the year 1305. During the church’s restoration, the Chapel of svatá Anna was added in 1480. These dates therefore refer to different stages in the building’s history: its construction, the inscription on the tower, and the later addition of the chapel.
The church stands on a low hill where a pagan place of worship existed before the Christian era. The location is therefore significant from a cultural-historical perspective, too: the hill’s religious associations predate the church. Kostel svatého Jiří is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
Archaeological Traces and Lookout Tower at Malý Chlum
Malý Chlum is also known as Holý Chlum. Settlement of the hillfort on the hill is dated to the Late Bronze Age. On the southern edge of the plateau, a remnant of the stone wall and a spiral staircase cut into the natural rock are still visible. Both prehistoric settlement and tangible structural traces are therefore central to this site. The visible remains give it a different historical significance from the church’s building history in Bořitov.
A wooden lookout tower was built on Malý Chlum in 2005. It offers views in all directions. The tower was intended to operate year-round, but it is currently closed because of structural damage. Check its operating status again before your trip if you plan to visit the tower for the views.
Sculpture Group on Velký Chlum and Getting There
The sculpture group of Hussite fighters is located on Velký Chlum near Bořitov. It was restored in 2023. Its historical significance differs from both the church architecture and the archaeological traces at Malý Chlum.
Bořitov has good road connections via the 43 expressway and District Road 377. For cyclists passing through Bořitov, there is an information board at the intersection of Loužky and Polní streets. The road connections describe access to Bořitov; the board is intended for cyclists passing through.
For a cultural-history-focused stay, you can choose between several points of interest: the church dated to the Romanesque period, with later construction phases; the prehistoric traces at Malý Chlum; and the sculpture group on Velký Chlum. If the lookout tower is important to your plans, bear in mind that it is currently closed and check its status before you set off.
