Slup offers several distinct reasons to visit: milling technology and cultural history, the museum of Czechoslovak fortifications from 1938, and cycling and wine routes. Another historical point of interest is the Panská rybárna. The town also hosts events ranging in focus from bread and crafts to wine. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these themes separate: the mill brings together technology and exhibitions, while the routes and events offer different reasons to stay in Slup.

Watermill and Mill History

The Vodní mlýn ve Slupi is a national cultural monument. The Renaissance building is equipped with four different milling systems, which are demonstrated to visitors. So it is not just about the architecture: four different systems give milling technology a distinct focus. The exhibition complements the demonstrations with a broad historical overview, covering the development of milling from prehistoric times to the 20th century. The Renaissance building anchors the site in a specific architectural period, while the exhibition traces the history of milling over a much longer span of time.

The Krhovicko-jaroslavický náhon, a technical monument more than 30 km long, is located at the mill. The technical significance therefore extends beyond the building: in addition to the milling systems, the canal is also part of the technical heritage associated with the mill.

Fortifications and Building History

A distinct point of interest is the museum of Czechoslovak fortifications from 1938. It is housed in a reconstructed light fortification structure of type vz. 37, A-160. Guided tours with an expert guide are organized; availability depends on the museum’s visiting schedule. If you plan to take a tour, check the visiting schedule before your trip.

The Panská rybárna offers a different perspective on Slup’s architectural history. The Renaissance building was erected on the site of a 16th-century fortress and served, among other things, to administer the surrounding ponds. Its history therefore encompasses both the earlier fortified building and an administrative role connected with the ponds.

Cycling and Wine Routes

There are two distinct route options to consider. The long-distance Greenway Praha–Vídeň cycling route passes through Slup and connects Prague with Vienna. The Moravian Wine Route also passes through the town. One is a long-distance cycling route connecting Prague and Vienna; the other is a wine route through Slup. As route markings can change, it is a good idea to check the current markings before setting out.

Bread Festival and Wine Tasting

Slavnosti chleba is held annually at the mill in Slup and in the surrounding area. The festival program includes performances by South Moravian folklore ensembles, a traditional fair, demonstrations of old crafts, and bread baking in field ovens. Individual program items may vary from year to year.

At Čulský košt in April, wines from small local winemakers and large wine producers from the Znojmo area are presented. This gives the event a different focus from Slavnosti chleba: here, the wines and their producers take center stage. The events also differ in timing when planning a trip: Slavnosti chleba is held annually, while Čulský košt takes place in April. Check the specific event dates and the respective program or participating producers in advance, as these may vary.
