Chvalatice: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Chvalatice
Chvalatice lies on a hill above the Dyje, surrounded by wooded hills and historic buildings. Marked hiking and cycling trails, as well as the Vranov Reservoir, complement the town’s history with opportunities for a nature-focused stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Chvalatice, distinguishing between these themes can help you decide whether to focus your trip more on the landscape and outdoor activities or on the town’s history.
River Landscape and Nature
Chvalatice lies on a hill above the Dyje. Below, the river flows through a deeply incised, wooded valley, with forests and hills surrounding the town. The elevation and river valley together shape the landscape: the municipality lies above, while the Dyje flows through the valley below.
About one kilometre south of the municipality lies the Růžový vrch Nature Reserve, within the cadastral area of Chvalatice. Its location is defined by rocky slopes above the Vranov Reservoir. As access conditions may change, check the current requirements before visiting.
Swimming in the Vranov Reservoir is possible in Chvalatická zátoka, although local water conditions can vary. Bear this in mind when planning your day. At Petrovy skály, there is vegetation in crevices on silicate rocks and scree slopes, as well as mobile silicate scree. The area’s natural landscape therefore encompasses not only forest and water, but also rock and scree formations.
Hiking and Cycling
The area around Chvalatice is particularly well suited to hiking and cycling. Numerous marked hiking and cycling trails run through the cadastral area. You can focus your stay on either activity or combine both according to your interests. The trails within the cadastral area and the suitability of the wider surroundings provide different ways to orient your plans geographically.
Buildings and Local History
A memorial to the victims of the First World War stands beside the church. The Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross is a single-nave Late Baroque building and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. The memorial and the church represent different aspects of a visit: remembrance of the victims of war and the history of sacred architecture.
Another trace of the past is the ruin of the hunting lodge, a small circular building. In the 19th century, it originally served the Lords of Bítov as a hunting lodge and resting place during hunts in the surrounding forests. Unlike the church, the focus here is on its former use: the building’s history is linked to hunting and rest.
Chvalatické hradiště is a preserved, freely accessible prehistoric and Slavic hillfort site. It lies south of Chvalatice on a narrow rocky promontory, which the Dyje flows around on three sides. Here, the site’s early history and its distinctive position by the river come together.
