Labuty: Wine-Growing History and Stream Landscape
Accommodation in Labuty
Labuty is an old wine-growing settlement in a valley along the Skalecký potok, about 10 km northeast of Kyjov. At the foot of the 346 m-high Hačky hill, the village lies where the Skalecký potok, Josefínský potok, and Labutský potok meet. The valley setting and the meeting of three streams give the place a distinct geographical character. As an old wine-growing settlement, Labuty also has a historical connection to wine-growing.
Valley, Streams, and Banks
The gently rolling landscape is crossed by three valleys formed by local streams. The Labutský potok is a left-bank tributary of the Skalecký potok; it has different characteristics upstream of Labuty and within the built-up area. Upstream of the village, the stream is intermittent and in a natural state. Its varied channel has a stony bed and sediment deposits. At the same time, it is lined by continuous, dense riverside vegetation that includes alder, poplar, willow, and ash trees. Within the built-up area, by contrast, the Labutský potok has a regulated, trapezoidal channel. There, its bed is muddy, its banks are steep and grassy, and some areas are characterized by ruderal vegetation. If you are interested in waterways and landscape features, you can see two different forms of the same stream here.
Chapel and Local History
The Chapel of the Virgin Mary, with its bell tower, dates from 1834 and was built on the site of an older wooden chapel. The year 1940 above the entrance commemorates the chapel’s most recent alteration. The two dates therefore mark different events: its construction in 1834 and a later alteration. This chronological distinction gives local history a tangible architectural dimension.
The monument to school principal Jindřich Škoda commemorates him and his death on March 13, 1943, at the Auschwitz concentration camp. The monument was unveiled on November 11, 1945. The chronology records his death and the later public commemoration as two successive events.
Historic Crosses
A stone cross dating from 1904 stands at the intersection of the regional road and the village square. On the cadastral boundary with the municipality of Skalka, a cast-iron cross dating from 1905 stands on a stone pedestal. Another cross is located at the entrance to the built-up area from the direction of Skalka. The crosses can be distinguished by their locations and, in the case of two of them, by their materials and dates.
Route and Regional Context
The Cesta krajinou mikroregionu Podchřibí is a regional route. It connects the municipalities of the microregion with the Chřiby mountain range and leads to places of interest and through the surrounding countryside. In the Čtvrtky area of Labuty, rest facilities for pilgrims were installed along the route in spring 2021.
The Podchřibí microregion is also home to the Rozhledna Súsedská observation tower. It is 21 m high and has a total of 99 steps. The tower is part of the wider regional context, while the chapel, crosses, and stream features describe specific aspects of the village itself. For choosing a travel destination, Labuty offers both a tangible local history and a landscape whose waterways take different forms.
