Discover Žďárec: Cultural History, Trails and Ponds
Accommodation in Žďárec
Žďárec offers a Gothic castle ruin, a parish church with an Early Gothic core, and trails in a landscape shaped by rivers. Seasonal activities are also available at the ponds. If you are considering Žďárec as a destination for a hotel stay, cultural history, exercise, or time by the water may influence your travel plans.
Cultural History in Žďárec
Víckov Castle is in the Víckov district of Žďárec. The Gothic ruin stands on a rocky promontory above the Loučka, near the Víckovský potok. It is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and is regarded as a valuable archaeological and cultural-historical monument.
Another landmark is the parish Church of St. Peter and Paul. It was originally Early Gothic; its Early Gothic core dates to around 1260, and a massive Baroque tower defines the building. Gothic frescoes have been preserved in the presbytery. The church thus brings together architectural history and surviving wall paintings.
The Havlov summer residence estate is also part of the town’s history: it was built in 1908 on a promontory above the Bobrůvka, in the cadastral area of Žďárec. Two Valík mills are also part of the town’s historic milling landscape. These buildings add distinctive features alongside the castle and church.
Trails, Rivers and Landscape
Žďárec lies in the foothills of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands. The area around the town is shaped by the Bobrůvka and Libochůvka rivers. The Horní Řeky and Dolní Řeky trails pass through different parts of the local landscape.
The Horní Řeky trail starts at the Žďárec cemetery and leads to the remains of the Žďárec fortress. The Dolní Řeky trail, by contrast, runs through the lower part of town, through the Bobrůvka valley and a holiday-home area. The routes therefore differ in their described landmarks and surroundings. Check ground conditions before setting out.
For a longer cycling itinerary, consider a route of about 40 kilometres along the Libochovka. It covers the stretch between Žďárec and Dolní Loučky. This offers another way to explore the area; check the surface and conditions before setting off.
Activities by the Water
Activities at Starý rybník change with the seasons: in summer, the pond is used for swimming; in winter, for ice skating and hockey. Local anglers use it for almost the entire year. Fishing conditions and permits may vary.
Nový rybník offers another place to fish. Seating by the water is suitable for a picnic. Local amenities may also change. In addition to the school canteen, there is a playground with play equipment for children and adults; its facilities may vary.
