Zvíkovské Podhradí offers several ways to plan your trip: Zvíkov Castle, historic buildings, routes through forests and riverside landscapes, and seasonal boat services on the Orlík Reservoir. If you are looking for a hotel in Zvíkovské Podhradí, consider whether you would like to spend your stay mainly visiting the castle, hiking, or covering longer distances by bike. The range of destinations and routes can help you choose what to focus on.

Zvíkov Castle and Architectural History

Zvíkov Castle stands on a rocky promontory on the Orlík Reservoir, at the confluence of the Vltava and Otava rivers. It is about one kilometre from Zvíkovské Podhradí. Self-guided visits without a guide are available at the castle. As visitor arrangements may change, check the latest official information before your visit.

The buildings also give the castle its distinctive historical character. The Hlízová Tower is the oldest surviving building in the castle complex and dates from around 1240. The Chapel of St Wenceslas has survived in the architectural form it had in the 13th century. The castle complex therefore brings together different historical points of reference: a tower dated approximately and a chapel whose surviving form is attributed to the 13th century.

Another landmark is the stone bridge in Zvíkovské Podhradí. It dates from the second half of the 18th century and was built in 1777. The bridge spans a deep moat cut into the rock. Five arches rest on tall piers, and there is also a niche chapel on the bridge. Those interested in historic architectural forms will find another specific architectural feature here, alongside the castle buildings.

Hiking, Riverside Routes and Outdoor Swimming Pool

The mixed and coniferous forests around Zvíkovské Podhradí invite you to go hiking. Another option is the new riverside path along the Otava and Vltava. Its twelve stops provide information about the region’s history, fauna and flora. The path thus brings together themes from nature and regional history, without requiring you to cover any particular hiking distance.

For a longer route, consider the Orlík–Zvíkovské Podhradí educational trail. It is about 30 kilometres long and has 15 information panels. The trail starts at Orlík Chateau and leads to Zvíkovské Podhradí. You can divide it into the Orlík–Nevězice and Nevězice–Zvíkovské Podhradí sections. This lets you choose between planning the entire route or either of the two named sections.

The Zvíkovské Podhradí outdoor swimming pool is another destination in its own right: it has two children’s pools with heated water and a larger swimming pool. It adds a different activity to the area’s routes and historic buildings. Which of these options you prioritise depends on whether you would rather spend your time outdoors, at historic sites, or at the swimming pool.

Cycling Routes and Seasonal Boat Services

Two cycling routes are available, each with different details. Cycle Route No. 1149 ends in Zvíkov. The 150-kilometre Pootavská Cycle Route starts in Modrava in the Šumava and ends in Zvíkov. The stated distances and destinations can help you choose; if you plan to follow the signs, check the current route markings.

During the season, regular boat services on the Orlík Reservoir run to Zvíkov Castle and Orlík Chateau. Since the boat service is seasonal and operates according to the current timetable, it is worth checking departure times for your planned visit. Travelling by boat offers a different view of the two destinations from routes on land and is a separate option for planning your day.
