When looking for a hotel in Vacov, you can first consider which focus best suits your trip: historic buildings, a route with an observation tower, winter sports or regional baking traditions. These themes are clearly distinct and can help you plan your stay according to your own interests.

Church Architecture and Regional Buildings

The Church of St. Nicholas is a concrete starting point for exploring Vacov’s architectural history. It was built in 1889–1890 in the Neo-Gothic style, after the inadequate previous church had been demolished in 1885. Its historic bells, however, date from the 16th century. This means the construction period and the history of the bells are far apart: the bells belong to an older historical layer than the church building. The church complex is located north of Vacov’s town center and also provides clear spatial orientation.

Another architectural highlight lies along the Spůlka Route. It passes through Mladíkov, where visitors can see a hexagonal bell tower with an onion dome. Its form differs significantly from that of the Church of St. Nicholas: here, a six-sided bell tower with an onion dome makes the impression, while there, the church building and historic bells are the focus. For a culture-focused trip, these are two distinct points of interest.

Routes and Views on Javorník

The stone Klostermannova Observation Tower, dating from 1938, stands on Javorník. From Vacov, it can be reached via Rohanov and Lhota. From the observation tower, views extend across the Šumava Mountains and inland, making the landscape an important part of this destination. The route via Rohanov and Lhota and the view at the destination are separate planning points. As local trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

The route from Vacov to Javorník also passes the listed Rotunda of St. Anthony of Padua. It dates from 1939 and was consecrated on August 4, 1940. The construction year and the consecration year are two different historical dates. In this way, the route combines an observation tower with a religious building, while each structure retains its own architectural and historical character.

Winter Activities and Regional Baking Traditions

There are two different points of interest for winter trips. In Vacov, ski lifts are available to visitors in winter; the ski slope in Javorník is groomed and illuminated for popular night skiing. Keep the locations distinct when planning: the ski lifts are in Vacov, while the groomed and illuminated slope is in Javorník. Since grooming and night skiing are seasonal, check what is available during your travel dates before your trip.

Regional baking traditions offer another distinct focus. Pekárna Vacov is a traditional Šumava foothills bakery. Its most popular and best-selling products include the “Šumava” and “Žitovec” breads, made with traditionally maintained rye sourdough. This puts specific types of bread and how they are made in the spotlight. The product range can change; if you are specifically looking for one of these breads, check the current selection.
