Strážný combines winter sports with historic traces of the Golden Path, offering different ways to shape your stay. In winter, skiing and cross-country skiing take center stage; for a history-focused visit, explore the ruins of Kunžvart Castle, remnants of the historic route, the pond embankment and a chapel. If you are looking for a hotel in Strážný, you can start by choosing your destination based on these interests.

Winter sports: downhill skiing, cross-country trails and the Šumava Ski Route

The Skiareál Strážný ski area has three drag lifts right in Strážný. It also has groomed downhill slopes with artificial snowmaking, as well as groomed cross-country trails. This offers two distinct options: downhill skiing combines lifts and slopes, while cross-country skiing takes place on the trails.

The Šumava Ski Route for cross-country skiing also passes through Strážný and connects Železná Ruda with Zadní Zvonková. While the groomed trails belong to the ski area, the route is a trail with these two named endpoints. Before your trip, check the ski area's current operating conditions.

Kunžvart: border castle and hiking trail

The ruins of Kunžvart Castle are located on the eastern spur of Strážný mountain, about 1.5 km from the municipality of Strážný. Kunžvart lies at an elevation of 1,033 m and is one of the highest castles in the Czech Republic. The royal watch castle was built near the national border to protect the Golden Path. Its high elevation and former defensive role offer two distinct insights into the castle's history.

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from the castle ruins to the former Orlova Huť and to a viewpoint dedicated to Václav Hrubý. If you plan to follow this trail, check its condition and the trail markings in advance, as both can change.

Traces of the Golden Path

On Obecní vrch, south of Strážný, there is a system of remnants of the Vimperk branch of the Golden Path that stretches for almost one kilometer. It is among the best-preserved remains of the route. The Strážný settlement enclave developed along this branch near the border with Germany. Both the remains on Obecní vrch and the origins of the settlement are therefore part of the history of the same route.

Pond embankment and chapel

The embankment of the Weiher pond is an earth-fill dam. It is considered the oldest earth-fill dam in Central Europe and dates from the 15th to 16th century.

The Chapel of Panny Marie stands on Kamenný vrch, northwest and above Strážný, and dates from 1834. Together with the pond embankment, it offers another perspective on the area's building history: the chapel's location and specific year of construction are key points of reference, while the dam also has significance across the wider region.

Strážný and Šumava National Park

The geographical location is also nuanced: the boundary of Šumava National Park runs through the Strážný settlement enclave; its northeastern part lies outside the park. The national park is therefore part of the area's geographical context, although the entire settlement enclave is not within its boundary.
