Three surviving buildings from the later period of the folk architect Jakub Bursa’s work, the first written mention in 1315, and a medieval fortress give this profile several historical layers. At the same time, roads, waterways, and accompanying greenery shape the rural landscape. This gives you some points of reference to decide whether historic architecture and a rural village setting suit your travel interests.

Farmsteads, Gables, and Building History

The three surviving buildings from Jakub Bursa’s later period of work can be distinguished by house number and year of construction: Usedlost čp. 7 dates from 1860; the former inn, čp. 9, and Usedlost čp. 11 both date from 1862. Usedlost čp. 7 is one of the three buildings in the village protected as cultural monuments of the Czech Republic. Its gable was originally yellow and blue. House number 9 was formerly an inn and has since been remodeled. House čp. 11 has a winged volute gable with folk art. Čp. 7 is therefore two years older than the two buildings from 1862.

The details offer different perspectives on rural architecture: for ÄŤp. 7, protected status and gable color go hand in hand; for ÄŤp. 9, its former use and remodeling are part of its building history. The shape and artwork of the gable define the architectural effect of ÄŤp. 11. A volute gable uses curved, volute-like forms; the winged design emphasizes its outward-sweeping silhouette. The folk art adds another design element to this form. Comparing the houses helps distinguish them not only by year, but also by their architectural design.

Local History from the Middle Ages to the 19th Century

Tvrzice was first mentioned in writing in 1315; this mention also records the founding of “Twrzicze” by Queen Eliška Přemyslovna, the wife of John of Luxembourg. This makes it possible to distinguish the medieval origins from the architecture of the 19th century as different historical layers. A medieval fortress is also part of Tvrzice’s history. According to local history, it stood on the site of the present-day farmstead; some sources, however, place it on Hůrka. The two location descriptions preserve the differing accounts of where the fortress stood.

Rural Landscape and Village Character

The landscape is also part of Tvrzice’s profile. It is harmonious and rural; its character is shaped by a network of roads and waterways with accompanying greenery. Built details and the rural landscape therefore sit side by side: the houses provide the architectural focus, while roads, water, and greenery shape the character of the landscape. If you choose a destination based on its overall appearance, this aspect complements the local history with the character of its surroundings.
