Strážkovice brings cycling, scenery and regional history together when planning a trip. A cycling route passes through the village; the hill, village green and smithy offer further points of interest. When looking for a hotel in Strazkovice, you can prioritize these features depending on whether you are mainly planning cycling tours or are interested in historical sites.

Scenery and views

Strážkovice lies on the eastern slope of Strážkovická hora. At 557 m, it is the highest point in the municipality. In favorable weather, the hill offers a wide view of the surrounding area, sometimes as far as the Alps. Whether this distant view is also possible depends on the weather—the Alps are therefore not always visible.

Cycling: routes of varying difficulty

The “Na kole Doudlebskem a Novohradskem” cycling route passes through Strážkovice. It is 110 km long in total, divided into 58 km and 52 km stages, is rated moderate to challenging, and is suitable for trekking and mountain bikes. If you are looking for a different route length, the “K rodišti Jana Žižky z Trocnova” cycling trip is a 63.7 km, moderately difficult option suitable for a full-day outing.

A 73 km cycling route is recommended for the “Stezka kovářství” educational trail. The CT1121 passes through Strážkovice on the way from Střížov to Trocnov. The tours listed therefore differ not only in length: two stages are specified for the 110 km route, while the 63.7 km trip is described as suitable for a full-day outing.

In 2024, a charging station for electric bicycles was installed in the center of Strážkovice, next to the cultural center with a restaurant. It is equipped with four bicycle stands and a compressor for inflating tires. As infrastructure can change, check the station’s current condition before using it.

History in the village and surrounding area

The Strážkovice smithy, a technical monument, stands on the village green. It was probably used for its original purpose until 1969. The regular settlement layout and the large, spacious village green also offer clues to the village’s history: they suggest it was founded during the High Medieval colonization of the 13th or 14th century.

Because of its historic buildings on the hill, Strážkovice is one of the so-called “fire villages.” In times of danger, residents used fires at night to warn of approaching troops. Another historic point of interest is the stone signpost. It is considered a valuable, authentically preserved example of the small traffic-related structures that supplemented the expanding road networks in the 19th century.

Trocnov lies about 2 km east of Strážkovice and is a national cultural monument. The Trocnov complex includes a memorial with a museum exhibition on the Hussite movement and a marked circular trail. Along the trail are the remains of former farmsteads: Jan Žižka lived in one, and his uncle lived in the other. In Střížov, the Church of St. Martin serves as the parish church for Strážkovice; it was consecrated in 1493. These places add connections to the Hussite movement and church history to the local history of the area.
