Discover Rosenberg: Castle, history and the Vltava Valley
Accommodation in Rosenberg
Rosenberg (Rožmberk nad Vltavou) lies in the Vltava Valley. The town’s historic landmarks include Rožmberk Castle, St. Nicholas Church, the Old Jewish Cemetery and remains of the town fortifications. Jakobínka Tower adds a viewpoint of its own to the castle; nearby, the Dolní Jílovice Nature Reserve adds a distinctive natural feature to the landscape. History, architecture and nature can therefore be considered as different themes when planning your trip.
Rožmberk Castle: History and Architecture
Rožmberk Castle dates from the mid-13th century and is one of the oldest castles of the Vítkovci family. Its history can also be viewed through the Buquoy family: the castle’s main tour introduces the family, which owned the castle from 1620 until the end of the Second World War. The castle’s early origins and a later, long period of ownership thus stand side by side as distinct historical reference points.
The castle’s present-day appearance dates to a renovation in the Romantic Gothic style. This architectural style is therefore part of its later design history, rather than its founding period in the mid-13th century. Visitors interested in the complex can distinguish between its medieval origins and the later form that shapes its appearance today.
Jakobínka Tower and Historic Sites
Jakobínka Tower is the only surviving remnant of the vanished Upper Rožmberk Castle. Climbing nearly 170 steps offers views of the entire double-castle complex and the surrounding landscape. The tower is accessible only as part of a guided tour. Since visitor access conditions may change seasonally, check the current tour conditions in advance. While the castle’s main tour introduces the Buquoy family, the tower offers a perspective on the double-castle complex and the landscape.
St. Nicholas Church also brings together different periods: it was first mentioned in writing in 1271. The Late Gothic building was constructed in the second half of the 15th century on older foundations. The written record thus predates the construction of the Late Gothic building, whose foundations are older still.
The Old Jewish Cemetery is a surviving testament to Jewish settlement and the last reminder of the long-standing Jewish tradition in Rožmberk nad Vltavou itself. Around 24 tombstones remain there; the oldest dates from the mid-18th century. In the southern part of the town, there are also remains of the 14th-century town fortifications. Together, these sites offer distinct historical perspectives: sacred architecture, Jewish heritage and traces of the fortifications.
The Vltava Valley and the Landscape
The Vltava Valley describes Rosenberg’s location; the nearby Dolní Jílovice Nature Reserve provides a separate connection to nature. Remnants of a natural beech-fir forest survive there. The town’s location in the valley and the forest remnants in the reserve thus represent two distinct aspects of the landscape.
For recreational paddlers, the Vltava from Vyšší Brod is suitable for beginners and families with children. If you are considering this route, check the conditions along the route and on the river before setting out.
