Rimov: Pilgrimage Complex and Malše Landscape
Accommodation in Rimov
Rimov combines sacred architectural history with a cultural landscape shaped by the pilgrimage complex and the Malše. At its heart is a national cultural monument; the Passion Way leads through the village, fields, and forest. Guided tours and a museum are also among the cultural offerings. Depending on whether you are mainly interested in architecture, the Stations of the Cross, or the landscape, a stay in Rimov can offer different points of focus.
Pilgrimage Complex and Images of the Virgin Mary
The pilgrimage complex includes the Church of the Holy Spirit and the Loreto Chapel. The chapel, founded in 1648, stands in the middle of the courtyard. The arrangement of the chapels across the grounds follows the traditional Stations of the Cross in Jerusalem. The spatial design is therefore as much a part of the pilgrimage site as its buildings: the paths and chapels bring the religious theme into the landscape.
The arcades of the complex contain 34 paintings depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. Together with the arrangement of the chapels, they offer another, visual perspective on the pilgrimage site. Visitors exploring the complex can consider not only its architecture but also the images and their religious significance.
The Passion Way through Rimov
The Rimov Passion Way comprises 25 stations. The Stations of the Cross pass through the village, across fields, through the forest, and along the Malše. The village, open spaces, forest, and river create distinct landscape settings along the route. Thus, the cultural experience centers not only on the architectural complex but also on the course of the Stations of the Cross through its surroundings.
Part of the Passion Way is shared with the Velešín–Roudné cycling route. The two routes therefore coincide along some sections, but are not described as being entirely identical. This distinction is important when planning if you are interested in the cycling route or the religious trail: the documented connection applies to part of the Passion Way, not its entire course.
The Malše and the Baroque Cultural Landscape
The cultural landscape of the Římovsko Landscape Conservation Area is particularly shaped by the extensive pilgrimage complex. It is considered one of the finest examples of a Baroque landscape inspired by Catholic mysticism. The area’s value therefore lies not only in individual buildings; the connection between the pilgrimage complex and its surrounding cultural landscape is also a defining feature.
As it flows through Rimov, the Malše gives parts of the valley a gorge-like character, with accompanying rock formations. The Římov drinking-water reservoir was built on the Malše between 1971 and 1978. It serves as a drinking-water reservoir. The river, valley, and reservoir are distinct aspects of the landscape and infrastructure that complement Rimov without being confused with the pilgrimage complex.
Guided Tours and Museum
Guided tours of the pilgrimage complex, its arcades, and the pilgrimage museum are available in Rimov. As tour times may change, it is advisable to check the current schedule before your visit. The “Roubenka” Museum is housed in an original wooden house dating from 1610. It adds another historic site to a visit to the pilgrimage complex.
The dates refer to different buildings: the museum’s wooden house dates from 1610, while the Loreto Chapel was founded in 1648. This chronology helps distinguish the various architectural elements rather than treating them as a single building.
