Budweis: City History and Routes Along the Vltava
Accommodation in Budweis
There are several different themes to consider for a stay in Budweis (České Budějovice): city history, historic buildings, routes along the Vltava, and local brewing history. If you are looking for a hotel, you can use these themes to decide how you would like to spend your time.
City History in Exhibitions and Buildings
The “Příběh města” exhibition at the South Bohemian Museum explores the history of České Budějovice and displays artifacts from the time the city was founded. The exhibition includes a free mobile app with a virtual guide in Czech and English at twelve stops. This combines a look at the exhibits with an additional guided experience in two languages. The exhibition content may be updated, and app features may also change. If you plan to use the virtual guide, check the latest information before your visit.
Náměstí Přemysla Otakara II. covers more than one hectare and is one of the largest square town squares in the Czech Republic. The stone basin of the Samson Fountain measures 15 meters in diameter and is also one of the largest in the Czech Republic. These measurements refer to different things: the area of the square and the diameter of the basin. This distinguishes the dimensions of the entire square from those of a single structure.
Rabenštejnská Tower is a four-story tower dating from the 14th century and one of two surviving towers from the former fortifications of České Budějovice. The “Kolem hradeb” route leads to this stop and to Železná panna. The Gothic tower Železná panna partially houses the first permanent exhibition about Přemysl Otakar II. Its 15 panels cover the king’s life and political career. The two stops therefore focus on different topics: the former fortifications and the history of a historical figure.
The former Dominican monastery with the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary is also part of the city’s cultural and historical character. The complex is among the oldest and most valuable historic monuments in České Budějovice. This adds a monastery with a church to the range of sites, alongside the square and towers.
Routes Along the Vltava: Water Route and Riverside Paths
The Stezka Vltavy offers a 98-kilometer water route from Lannova loděnice in České Budějovice via Hluboká nad Vltavou to Týn nad Vltavou, and onward to Koloděje nad Lužnicí. This is distinct from the 60 kilometers of developed paths along the banks of the Vltava. These are intended for cycling, inline skating, and walking. The two figures therefore describe different types of route, not the same stretch or the same way of traveling. If you are choosing between activities, the water route information gives its length and the listed stops; the riverside paths are associated with three other activities. Check route details again before traveling, as path conditions may also change.
Brewing History as a Separate Focus
The Budějovický Budvar visitor center features a multimedia exhibition about the history of brewing in České Budějovice. It complements the themes of the city’s founding, its buildings, and its fortifications with an insight into local brewing history. The exhibition presentation may change. If you are especially interested in this topic, you can consider it as a separate focus alongside the city’s historic sites and routes.
