In České Budějovice, you’ll find something to suit a range of interests: historic buildings and exhibitions, markets, a large park, and routes along the Vltava. The places and activities below differ not only in subject but also in format—from a market held on specific days of the week to a water route with a stated length.

Squares, churches and city history

Přemysl Otakar II Square covers more than one hectare and is one of the largest square town squares in the Czech Republic. St. Nicholas Church was built in the 13th century as the parish church of the royal town. After the Diocese of České Budějovice was established, it was elevated to cathedral status and became the first and principal church of the entire diocese. The former Dominican monastery with the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary offers another historical connection; it is among the city’s oldest and most valuable historical monuments.

The South Bohemian Museum combines the history of the city with a broader look at the region. Its “Příběh města” (“Story of the City”) exhibition presents artefacts documenting the history of České Budějovice from its founding. The permanent natural history, archaeological and ethnographic exhibition is on the second floor of the historic museum building and covers 730 square metres. The museum also documents the history, culture, folk art and nature of South Bohemia. Check the current exhibitions before your trip.

Exhibitions and distinctive buildings

Since 1993, a branch of the Alšova jihočeská galerie has been housed in the restored Gothic-Renaissance Wortner House on U Černé věže Street. The house also hosts temporary gallery exhibitions; if these are important to your visit, check the current programme.

The Black Tower offers a different perspective on the city’s heritage: its viewing platform is 46 metres above the ground and can be reached by climbing 225 steps, mostly made of wood. The number of steps gives you a concrete point of reference for planning; check access before your visit. The Budějovický Budvar brewery visitor centre also has its own thematic focus. It includes the multimedia exhibition “Příběh Budějovického piva” (“The Story of Budějovice Beer”) about the history of brewing in České Budějovice. Check the current visitor arrangements in advance. The České Budějovice Observatory and Planetarium conducts astronomical research and introduces the general public to astronomy and related sciences.

Parks, cycle routes and the Vltava

Stromovka Park is the largest park in České Budějovice, covering 68 hectares. Its paved and unpaved paths are used by cyclists and inline skaters. For a longer trip along the river, the Vltava Trail offers two different perspectives: a 98-kilometre water route from the Lanna Shipyard in České Budějovice via Hluboká nad Vltavou and Týn nad Vltavou to Koloděje nad Lužnicí, and 60 kilometres of well-maintained paths along the Vltava for cycling, inline skating and walking. Path conditions and access to the water can change; check before making plans.

Cycle Route 12 runs north–south along the Vltava and is part of an international cycle route that crosses the city area from Germany to Austria. This makes it possible to distinguish the designated options by type of activity: the Vltava Trail includes both a water route and paths for several activities, while Cycle Route 12 is described as part of an international cycling connection.

Market days and regional produce

Markets are held year-round at Piarist Square on Thursdays and Saturdays. Offerings include agricultural produce, fruit and vegetables, baked goods, honey, preserves, meat and sausages, dairy products, and locally made crafts and artisan goods. Individual vendors may vary. If visiting a market is part of your plans, check the market days before your trip.
