Němětice lies in the Volyňka Valley in the Šumava foothills, at the foot of the Bohemian Forest. The village is defined by its rural architectural forms and the different layers of its history. A wooded ridge and the Zlatá stezka route add geographical and regional context to the picture.

Landscape and Geographical Setting

The wooded ridge, with the peaks of Kráva and Ostrý vrch, forms part of the southern side of the Peklov Valley. Kráva reaches 622 metres, and Ostrý vrch 591 metres, making Kráva the higher of the two peaks. Němětice lies in the Volyňka Valley. The valley setting and the high points represent different geographical features of the landscape.

History from Early Settlement to the Village’s Founding

Hradec hillfort near Němětice lies on a spur above the Volyňka and was settled during the Iron Age and the hillfort period. Another date of note is 1315: Němětice was founded by Queen Eliška Přemyslovna on royal land, along with several other villages in the area. The historical context therefore includes two reference points: early settlement at Hradec hillfort and the founding of the village. Hradec lies about 600 metres southeast of the chapel in the village.

The Protected Farmstead, No. 29

The Baroque farmstead, No. 29, stands on the northern edge of Němětice, on the road between the village green and the main road. It is one of the finest examples of vernacular architecture in the area around Volyně. The protected site includes the farmhouse, stables, a barn, a masonry gate, and enclosed plots.

Architectural Details in the Village

The chapel on the village green has a simple winged gable and a bell in the roof ridge. The Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is a masonry building with a rectangular floor plan and a three-sided apse, in the style of rural Baroque. The floor plan and apse describe the building’s form, while rural Baroque identifies its style. Other features stand out in the houses: House No. 8 on the road still has a timber-framed room and a boarded gable; House No. 2 is simple and has a triangular gable. The focus thus shifts from the protected farmstead site to details of individual houses.

Route and River

The Zlatá stezka route passes through Radošovice and Němětice on its way to Volyně. This sequence gives the choice of destination a specific regional context. Cold-water swimmers can bathe in the Volyňka. Trip planning can therefore combine a regional route with a specific activity by the river.
