Discover Chelčice: Memorial, Garden and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Chelčice
Chelčice brings together local history and architecture with a nature garden and a range of cycling and walking routes. Notable stops include the memorial to Petr Chelčický, the Church of St Martin and the Chapel of St Mary Magdalene. Visitors planning a stay can choose among these different highlights: the regional exhibition, historic architectural details, or the routes described through and around the village. Some visits require arrangements to be made in advance.
Memorial and Regional Exhibition
The memorial to Petr Chelčický is housed in a reconstructed medieval barn on the village square. The site thus links Petr Chelčický’s name with a historic type of building. The ground floor houses a regional exhibition about Chelčicko and the Libějovicko-Lomecko heritage conservation zone. These two areas give the exhibition a regional focus that extends beyond the memorial itself.
Plan a separate visit to the memorial: it must be arranged by phone several days in advance. Confirm the date before travelling, as these access arrangements may change. This will help you plan your visit around the arrangements actually made, rather than treating it as a spontaneous stop.
Church of St Martin and Chapel of St Mary Magdalene
The Church of St Martin in Chelčice dates from around 1240 and is Late Romanesque. Its original Romanesque portal survives on the south side. The church’s Romanesque history can be explored in two specific ways: through its date and through a surviving architectural detail.
The church is open during regular Sunday services, which begin at 11 am. By prior arrangement with the nearby Domov svatého Linharta, it can also be visited together with the exhibition about Petr Chelčický. Confirm access arrangements locally before travelling. Another historic stop is the early Baroque, hexagonal Chapel of St Mary Magdalene. It was built between 1660 and 1663 and remodelled between 1687 and 1710; the two date ranges distinguish the original building phase from the later remodelling.
Nature Garden and Seasonal Events
Since July 2012, the nature garden of Chelčický domov sv. Linharta has held the “Přírodní zahrada” (Nature Garden) certificate. Its features include vegetable beds, fruit trees, an insect hotel and various herbs. A therapeutic path and seating areas provide opportunities for rest and relaxation. The garden thus features both planted areas and a path and places to sit and unwind.
For many years, the garden has taken part in the Open Gardens Weekend, held on the second weekend in June. This recurring event gives the garden a seasonal connection, while its certificate and features describe its permanent characteristics. When planning your trip, it is useful to bear this distinction in mind: the garden’s features are not tied to a particular date, whereas the Open Gardens Weekend is.
Cycling Route, Walking Trails and Fruit-Growing Tradition
Cycling Route 1 starts at kilometre point 0.0 in Chelčice. Its total length is 48 km, and it is rated as demanding. These details give a clear indication of the route’s length and difficulty without specifying a particular riding time. A regular cycling tourism event associated with the route takes place annually in May and September.
Slavnosti květů, an annual festival of fruit growers from the Chelčicko-Lhenický microregion, is also part of the regional events calendar. In the 2025 edition, the jízda květů started on 3 May in the historic centre of Chelčice, with numerous cyclists and walkers taking part. This start date refers specifically to the 2025 edition.
Two other trail descriptions may be useful for finding your way on foot. The Zeyerova stezka leads from the royal town of Vodňany through Chelčice, along a four-row avenue. A marked route from Lomec follows an old avenue, passes the Chapel of St Mary Magdalene and continues to the road to Chelčice. The descriptions differ in their stated starting points and points along the way; check the Lomec route markings locally. The regional fruit-growing tradition is reflected in two notable varieties bred in Chelčice: the “Libějovická raná” cherry and the “Petr Chelčický” apple.
