Teindles: Church, Folklore and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Teindles
Teindles brings together several specific themes to help you plan a stay: St. Vincent’s Church, folklore traditions and recurring events on foot and by bike. Doudleby lies in a bend of the Malše River; the church stands on a hill above the river, on the site of an old Slavic hillfort. A rampart several metres high and about 100 metres long has been preserved there.
St. Vincent’s Church and local history
The church shows building phases from different centuries. The sacristy and presbytery are Gothic elements dating from the 14th century; the frescoes in the sacristy date from around 1350. By contrast, the church’s present flat-ceilinged form and its tower date from 1708 to 1709. Medieval elements thus sit alongside a later phase of design.
The Čapkův Bridge is also part of local history: its opening was celebrated on 25 August 1929. The bridge is also a landmark on the Velešín–Roudné cycling route, which runs from Hamr via Doudleby to Plav.
Folklore and recurring festivals
The Doudlebské dožínky harvest festival is held annually and has taken place since 1997. The festival includes a traditional costume parade and afternoon open-air performances at Čapák, including performances by Doudleban and Kovářovan. The format may vary from year to year; check the current programme before travelling.
The Masopust carnival in Doudleby includes a rose procession through the village, organised by the Doudleban folklore group. Its date depends on Easter, so it does not fall on the same date every year. Unlike the annual dožínky harvest festival, the Masopust’s movable calendar is a separate factor to consider when planning a trip.
Cycling and hiking
Na kole okolo Doudleb is a cycling tour traditionally held in June, covering about 30 to 40 kilometres. It is particularly suitable for families with children. The Okolo Doudleb hiking event takes place on the third Saturday in September; its route is about 15 kilometres long and leads through the area around Doudleby. Check the current dates of both events before travelling. The two events therefore differ both in season and in mode of travel and route length.
A 200-metre detour from the Čapkův Bridge to St. Vincent’s Church is also described for the Velešín–Roudné cycling route. This means there are two distinct cycling options: the Na kole okolo Doudleb event, traditionally held in June, and a route that passes through Doudleby between Hamr and Plav.
The Malše as a landscape and activity theme
The river bend shapes Doudleby’s setting on the Malše. The river is also associated with Odemykání Malše, a tradition of navigating the Malše that dates back to the 1990s. Details may vary from one edition to another. The themes for a stay thus range from the historic church and hillfort to folklore events, cycling and hiking events, and the river tradition.
