Kalsching: Architectural History and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Kalsching
Kalsching (Czech: Chvalšiny) is designated as an urban heritage conservation area. Historic buildings, a strikingly shaped square, and a museum come together in the town, alongside routes towards Blanský les and a cycling route. There are several options for planning your trip: you can focus on local history and exhibitions, or combine your stay with a bike ride. If you are looking for hotels in Kalsching, it helps to first decide whether culture or outdoor activities will play a bigger role in your day.
Townscape and Architectural History
The large, spindle-shaped square in Kalsching is about 530 metres long. Starting at the stream, it extends at a right angle up a gentle slope. “Spindle-shaped” describes an elongated layout that tapers towards both ends; its length and course make the square’s distinctive shape easy to see. The Museum of the Schwarzenberg Floating Canal is located on the square, housed in a carefully restored historic building.
The Church of St Mary Magdalene was built between 1487 and 1507 in the late Gothic style and is considered an important work of the Rosenberg building workshop. The access arrangements are important for visitors: the church is generally only accessible during regular Sunday services. Check this in advance if you are planning a visit. Another historic monument is the pillory with a statue of St John of Nepomuk. It is a four-sided granite column with bevelled edges, dating from 1690, and is one of the few surviving pillories. Its date provides a later, precisely dated point of reference compared with the church’s construction period.
Museum and Landscape
The exhibitions at the Museum of the Schwarzenberg Floating Canal provide information about the nature and natural monuments of Šumava. The same historic building on the square thus brings together two topics: the architectural history of the museum building and the natural subjects covered in the exhibitions. Kalsching itself lies within the Blanský les Protected Landscape Area and serves as a starting point for routes towards Blanský les. The exhibitions focus on Šumava, while the routes from Kalsching lead towards Blanský les.
Cycling Route and Planning
For a bike ride, the “Rediscovered Kájovsko–Boleticko” route offers a specifically named circular tour. It starts in Chvalšiny via cycling route 1139 and is about 20 kilometres long, including the detours. Its course uses only existing marked cycling paths and Class III roads. The stated distance therefore includes the circuit and the detours. As route descriptions can change, check the current route before setting out.
The church and the cycling route answer different planning questions: a visit to the church is generally tied to regular Sunday services, while the bike ride can be assessed by its approximate total distance. This lets you plan a time-dependent activity and an excursion with a stated distance separately as part of your stay.
