When planning a trip to Česká Olešná, you can choose from several different points of interest: architectural and landscape history at Tumaperk, the history of the château, a historic surveying pillar and the Via Czechia Route. The town’s history dates back to its first recorded mention in 1349; the individual sites tell stories from very different periods and about very different subjects.

Tumaperk: an early Renaissance manor house and ruins

Tůmův vrch, also known as Tumaperk, is a place to visit near Česká Olešná. The early Renaissance manor house was built in 1513–1514 by the brothers Hynek and Jindřich z Vydří. In 1892, lightning struck Tumaperk; the building burned down completely and subsequently fell into ruin. This makes it possible to clearly trace its history from construction to ruin.

A beech forest was planted around Tumaperk, and today it stands amid the forest. The ruins lie just under a kilometre northeast of Česká Olešná. They are freely accessible, but are outside marked hiking trails. Take the lack of trail markings into account when finding your way, and check access before your visit.

The château of Česká Olešná and its history

The château of Česká Olešná acquired its present Empire-style appearance after Josef Laboriette bought it in 1810. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1963. At the same time, it is privately owned and not open to the public. Bear this distinction in mind when planning your visit: the château’s history is part of the town, but the château itself is not open to the public for visits. Its historic architecture is reflected in the Zámecký rybník.

The “mamlas” cadastral surveying pillar

The 18th-century cadastral surveying pillar offers another perspective on the history of Česká Olešná. It is known locally as “mamlas”. During the Theresian and Josephine military surveys, the pillar served as a starting point for surveying the landscape and creating cadastral maps. It stands on the northwestern edge of the town, on the road to Bednáreček. The pillar is freely accessible; check access before your visit.

Via Czechia Route and practical information

Česká Olešná is a stop on the Via Czechia “Českomoravská stezka” route. From here, the route continues to Strmilov via cycle route No. 1240 and an unmarked field path. This sequence matters for navigation: the marked cycle route is followed by an unmarked section. If you are planning this route, take the lack of markings into account as you prepare.

For Česká Olešná, the Via Czechia Route also lists a shelter, overnight accommodation, food supplies and a bus connection. If these details matter to your travel plans, check the bus timetable and availability in particular in advance. This lets you consider visits to the town and route planning separately: Tumaperk and the surveying pillar offer different ways to explore local history, while the connection to Strmilov describes a specific section of the route.
