If you want to combine nature and village history on your trip to Brezi, you’ll find two distinct areas of interest here: protected pond landscapes with amphibians, and a chapel, crosses and a monument in the village. Cycling is also part of getting your bearings: Březí lies on the signposted Blatensko Cycling Circuit No. 4.

Nature and Pond Landscapes

The western part of the landscape around Březí is characterised by a mosaic of water, fields and woodland. The Rybník Vočert a Lazy Natural Monument is a protected wetland system comprising two ponds and a shallow pool. Fire-bellied toads and other amphibians are commonly found there. The area is one of the most important habitats for the fire-bellied toad in the Czech Republic. The Březí u Blatné cadastral area is also part of the natural monument.

Another protected area is the Újezdec Nature Reserve. It extends across the cadastral areas of Březí u Blatné and Újezdec u Bělčic. It protects pond communities and well-preserved adjacent habitats with specially protected animal species, as well as significant stands of aquatic macrophytes, or water plants. Újezdec – Planinský rybník and Kozor form a cascade of two small ponds in a shallow depression. Amphibians are also abundant there; the area is considered an important habitat for the fire-bellied toad in the Czech Republic.

The two pond areas therefore offer different points of interest for nature-minded travellers: at RybnĂk VoÄŤert a Lazy, the focus is on the wetland system and the fire-bellied toad; at Ăšjezdec, it is on the pond cascade, the adjacent habitats and their plant and animal life. This distinction can help you decide which nature-related aspects to focus on during your trip.

Chapel, Crosses and a Protected Linden

A Baroque chapel dating from 1836 stands on the village square in Březí. Since 1997, it has been dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Anthony. A cross dating from 1860 stands on a rise towards Hvožďany. Another cross stands at the eastern edge of the village: it dates from 1907 and was erected by a local resident as a sign of his penance.

A stone cross erected in 1908 also stands on the village square. A monument beside it commemorates the victims of the First World War. The locations distinguish the village’s historic landmarks: the chapel, stone cross and monument are on the village square, while the other two crosses stand on the rise towards Hvožďany and at the eastern edge of the village.

Another protected feature is the Divadelní linden. It stands in the courtyard of the local inn at house no. 33 in Březí. Historical measurements give its height as 18 metres and its trunk circumference as 675 centimetres; later measurements may differ slightly. There is an inn in Březí. Check its current opening hours in advance if you plan to visit during your stay.

Cycling and Travel Interests

The signposted Blatensko Cycling Circuit No. 4 is a useful reference point when choosing a destination: Březí lies on this circuit. If nature is your priority, the pond areas and the fire-bellied toad offer a different focus from the chapel, crosses, monument and protected linden. This lets you match your travel interests with the specific features of the place when choosing a hotel in Brezi, without conflating its natural and cultural attractions.
