Discover Velešín: Culture, Trails and Hotels
Accommodation in Velešín
Velešín lies on a plateau between two river valleys. The Malše lies just below the town, and to the south there are many views. These landscape features provide a first impression for your stay. There are also historic places in Velešín and its surroundings, trails of varying lengths, an outdoor swimming pool and a traditional pilgrimage. The themes are easy to distinguish: you can focus on architectural history, plan a walk or take an event date into account.
Culture and Architectural History in Velešín
At Kantůrkovec, you can see a preserved black kitchen with a smoke hood. It also houses the permanent exhibition “Malovaný svět” by the naive artists and married couple Šítalovi. The two highlights are different: the kitchen is a preserved room, while the exhibition is devoted to the artistic couple. Kantůrkovec thus brings architectural heritage and naive art together.
The former Church of St. Philip and James was consecrated in 1491; a tower was added in 1631. Today, the building houses an information centre, the town museum, a gallery and Café Jakub. The dates mark two distinct stages in the building’s history: its consecration in 1491 and the addition of the tower in 1631. The building also brings together visitor information, local history, a gallery and a café.
There are also historical connections in the area around Velešín. Velešín Castle was built as a royal castle towards the end of the first third of the 13th century and abandoned in 1487. These details place its history in context without equating it with the buildings within the town.
In Holkov, near Velešín, two stone bridges, a former coach house and a former horse-drawn railway substation have been preserved. The structures are connected with the horse-drawn railway. Access to some individual structures may be restricted; take this into account when planning your visit.
Trails and Activities
Two routes of different lengths are available for a walk. The “Naučná stezka Velešínsko” nature trail is 5.5 km long and includes six stops with information boards. The “Procházka historickým Velešínem” trail is an easy 2 km circular route for walkers, cyclists and families with children. Comparing the lengths can help you choose: the nature trail is longer and includes six stops along the way, while the circular route is 2 km. The route details may be updated.
Another option is the “Po stopách koněspřežní železnice okolím města Velešína” route, which runs through the area around Velešín. Check that the route is available before you travel. This lets you distinguish between the nature trail, the historic circular route and the horse-drawn railway route without conflating their characteristics.
Outdoor Swimming Pool and Pilgrimage
Velešín outdoor swimming pool has a multi-purpose pool with a 250 m² children’s area and the “Trio Slide” waterslide. The pool water is heated to 24–27°C. Information about the facility may change; the slide may be available seasonally. If the outdoor pool is part of your plans, check the latest information about the facility and the slide before your visit.
The traditional Velešín pilgrimage takes place on the first Sunday in September and offers a programme for children and adults. The date and programme details may change. So check the information for the year of your stay if you want to plan your trip around the pilgrimage.
