Discover Zihle – Culture and Granite Landscapes
Accommodation in Zihle
Zihle offers several points of interest to help you plan your stay: a medieval monument, buildings shaped by the Baroque period, a memorial site and striking granite formations. The Smírčí kámen provides a specific local landmark, while rail and bus connections help with orientation. When looking for a hotel, first consider whether architectural history, nature or both are your main interests.
Cultural history and orientation in Zihle
The Smírčí kámen is a medieval monument in Zihle. It stands about 30 m west of the square, on the south side of the road to the railway station and beside a row of houses. The circular sandstone slab rests on a shaft that widens slightly toward the bottom. A raised paw cross stands out on the front, within a circular border. The stone’s material, shape and relief give it clearly distinguishable features.
The Socha sv. Jiljí stands north of the Kostel sv. Václava, on the right-hand side of the road to Velečín. The Baroque statue of a saint rises on a tall prismatic pedestal. The Kostel sv. Václava is an elaborate Baroque building designed by F. M. Kaňka and occupies a prominent position in the village. The statue and church therefore offer different architectural points of reference: one is the figure on its tall pedestal, the other the Baroque church building.
The Kostel sv. Filipa a Jakuba also tells the story of several building phases. The church has older origins; its present appearance was shaped by Baroque and late Baroque alterations. South of this church’s cemetery, a monument to the victims of the death march stands in a carefully designed park. The site thus links architectural history with a memorial whose subject is explicitly named in the monument.
Granite formations and hiking trail
Near Zihle are the Viklany, a group of granite blocks. They were formed by the selective weathering of coarse-grained biotite granite. The Dědek granite formation is also nearby. It is about 5 m high and 8 m wide. The two names refer to different forms: Viklany denotes a group of blocks, while Dědek is a single formation for which approximate measurements are available. Visitors interested in geology can compare the effect of a group with the dimensions of a single formation.
A yellow-marked hiking trail passes through the U Báby–U lomu rock formations. The area can be reached via a walkable tourist trail; the access point is more than 250 m from the road. The protected area preserves particularly notable erratic boulders and groups of boulders as examples of various forms of block disintegration in Tiská granite in the Žihle area. Check the trail markings before setting out.
Getting there and finding accommodation
The Plzeň–Žatec railway line runs through Zihle. There are good bus connections toward Kralovice, Plasy and Lubenec. If you plan to travel by train or bus, check the current timetables before your trip; the connections mentioned provide general guidance but do not replace checking the relevant departure time.
Then compare the specific location details of a hotel with your own plans. The location information for the Smírčí kámen and the details about the hiking trail answer different questions: the first describes a point west of the square, while the second describes the route through the U Báby–U lomu rock formations.
