Vřeskovice: Church Complex, Fortress and Landscape
Accommodation in Vřeskovice
Vřeskovice can be explored for travel planning through two themes: the protected church complex and the history of the fortress on the one hand, and the hollow open to the east and the wooded hills on the other. If you choose a place based on specific cultural-historical and landscape features, these details offer different starting points. This lets you determine whether these particular highlights suit your trip before looking for a hotel.
Church and protected complex
The protected complex of the Church of St. John the Baptist comprises the church, a mortuary, a bell tower and the associated grounds. On the south side of the church is a bricked-up early Gothic portal. These two details shed light on the subject at different levels: the protection covers several components, while the portal is a single, precisely located architectural feature. The terms answer two different questions: “early Gothic” classifies the portal stylistically, while “bricked-up” describes its structural condition. The stylistic term and the condition are therefore separate pieces of information about the same detail.
Fortress and local history
The former fortress is also part of the area’s history. It stood behind the school building; house No. 38 was built on that site, and a low stone wall is still visible there. A branch of the Drslaviců family built the fortress as its seat. In 1455, the Lords of Roupov incorporated the fortress, together with Krásný Úpor and Mstice, into their domain. The year 1455 dates the incorporation into the domain, not the construction of the fortress. These statements serve different historical purposes: the seat identifies the fortress’s role, the date places it under a later lordship, and the detail about house No. 38 anchors the history behind the school building in today’s townscape.
Hollow and wooded hills
Vřeskovice lies in a hollow that opens east toward Borovy. Wooded hills border the village to the north, west and south. They include Míchalice (483 m), Holý vrch (474 m), Kobylnice (482 m), Ostrý vrch (520 m), Kněžhora (491 m), Stříbrnice (538 m) and Stramchý (541 m). The elevation figures make it possible to compare the individual hills; there is a difference of 67 metres between the lowest and highest figures given. Together, the directional details and elevations describe a specific terrain profile.
Sports, hiking and inn
The sports facility of Tělovýchovná jednota Vřeskovice can also be used by non-members for volleyball and nohejbal. Check the current access rules on site. Vřeskovická šlápota is a traditional New Year’s Day hike; one edition was scheduled for January 1, 2026. There is an inn in the Vřeskovice cultural centre. Before your trip, check whether it is currently open.
