Poleň: Churches, Art and Historic Traces
Accommodation in Poleň
Poleň offers historic streetscapes, religious art and routes through the town. Its historic centre is designated a village conservation area. Its history spans medieval church buildings and historic structures that have disappeared; a regional cycle route and a red-marked hiking trail also pass through Poleň. You can shape your visit around your cultural interests or the kind of activity you prefer.
Churches and Art in Poleň
The Church of All Saints brings together several periods: its Gothic core dates from the 14th century, and it was structurally altered in the 16th and 18th centuries. Inside the church, you can see a copy of a painting of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child from the workshop of Lucas Cranach. Another artistic connection is the Poleň Madonna: the original, an oil painting on wood from the 16th century, is held at the National Gallery Prague.
The Church of St. Markéta dates from the first half of the 14th century. Today, only its perimeter walls remain. All Saints, with its art copy, and St. Markéta, as a ruin, show two different sides of the local churches: one is a place with a work of art inside, while only the walls of the other remain.
Chapel, Linden Tree and Historic Buildings
The Chapel of St. Salvator was built in 1789 and serves as the crypt of Poleň’s priests. It thus links a specific date with a distinctive role in the town’s history. Historian Josef Dobrovský liked to sit beneath the Poleň linden tree. This biographical connection adds another kind of local memory to the stories of the religious buildings.
The structural remains of the former fortress can also be placed in time: only its cellars survive in today’s House No. 13. In 1820, a manorial farm building was erected on its site. Another historic trace is the former Pasička watermill. It was a typical Šumava mill, was first mentioned in 1379, and has since disappeared. Together, the fortress and the mill show that Poleň’s architectural history includes not only surviving buildings but also places where earlier structures no longer exist.
Cycle Route, Hiking Trail and Seasonal Event
Regional cycle route 305 runs via Klatovy, Tajanov, Poleň, Lučice, Chocomyšl, Koloveč, Srbice and Hlohovčice to Staňkov. If you use this route to plan your trip, check the current signage before setting off. A red-marked hiking trail also passes through Poleň; here, too, it is advisable to check the markings on site. These details give you two different points of reference for planning your trip: a cycling route through a series of named places and a hiking trail through Poleň.
A recurring event in the annual calendar is the Strašidelná stezka, held regularly in early November. If you are planning to visit Poleň specifically for this event, check the exact date for your travel year. This lets you combine your visit with the town’s cultural and historic character or with this seasonal event.
