Lomec – History and Routes
Accommodation in Lomec
Lomec can be explored from various travel perspectives: its history, first mentioned in 1358; an oval hillfort site; routes on foot and by bike; and bus services. When planning, it is worth distinguishing historical route connections from information about walking and cycling routes. Conditions should also be taken into account when finding your way and enjoying the views. This lets you choose where to focus, whether on local history, tours, or nature.
History and Hillfort Site
Lomec is first mentioned in 1358. An old trade route from Bavaria once ran through Lomec to Luby and onward into the Bohemian interior. The year refers to the first mention of the village, while the trade route describes a course it followed in the past. These are different historical references: one dates the first mention of the village, while the other traces the former route.
The hillfort site at Lomec is oval in shape and measures 20 × 24 meters. No wall remains have survived there. The site lies at the southeastern edge of a pond that is currently drained. Its shape, dimensions, and location offer different clues for understanding it: the measurements refer to the hillfort site, while the absence of masonry is another aspect of what can be seen today.
Getting Around on Foot and by Bike
The blue-marked Svatojakubská cesta walking route passes through the Lomec area. Check the markings on site before relying on them for navigation. This way, your plans take account both of the stated route through the area and the markings you actually find.
Another route option is the cycling route from Klatovy to Loreta. It starts at Klatovy main railway station or any other starting point in Klatovy, passes through Lomec, and ends at Mercandinovy sady or any other destination in Klatovy. This means you can choose different starting and ending points within Klatovy. Local route conditions may change, so check them before setting out. By comparison, the walking route passes through the Lomec area, while the cycling route also offers different starting and ending points.
Bus Services, Views, and Nature
Lomec and Novákovice are served exclusively by buses. They share a stop called “Lomec, Novákovice, rozc. 0.4”. Check current bus services before traveling. If you continue along the local road toward Luby, you can see Klatovy in the valley to the left of the road in good weather. Both the direction you are traveling and the weather therefore affect this view.
The Luňáky Nature Reserve protects the last remaining wet meadows in the Úhlava Basin, as well as breeding sites and migration areas of protected and endangered animal species. This nature topic therefore focuses both on the wet meadow habitat and on the area's importance to animal species. It offers a different perspective from the hillfort site: here the focus is on protected habitats and areas used by animals, while the hillfort site concerns local history and a specific historical location.
