Lipno: History, Reservoir and Hracholusky Loop
Accommodation in Lipno
For a trip to Lipno, the Hracholusky Reservoir and the town’s history offer two different points of reference. Lipno is one of the gateways to the reservoir’s recreational area. Practical topics to consider when planning include seasonal boat trips, the Hracholusky Loop, and fishing in the wider area. Historical references range from the town’s first mention to fortifications and a castle ruin nearby. Depending on your interests, you can make water-based activities, the loop trail, or historical connections your main focus.
Reservoir, boat trips and fishing
The Hracholusky Reservoir stretches for 22 km along the Mže between Stříbro and Pilsen. The Josef Švamberk excursion boat runs regular trips on the reservoir from June to the end of September. For a specific trip, it is advisable to check the timetable in advance. The boat was formerly called Plzeň.
In the wider area of Lipno, year-round fishing is permitted at the Hracholusky Reservoir in the Mže 4 fishing area (number 431 028). If you plan to fish there, check the applicable rules and permit requirements before fishing. Boating and fishing therefore have different planning timeframes: boat trips are seasonal, while year-round fishing is permitted in the fishing area mentioned.
Hracholusky Loop
The 31.6 km Hracholusky Loop runs along the south bank of the reservoir to Lipno. From Lipno, the trail leads to a unique group of Roman soldier statues by the reservoir. The modern art installation recalls the history of Roman trade routes to Bohemia. The route therefore combines a specific connection to Roman trade with a work of art of a modern character. The measurements refer to different things: 22 km describes the extent of the reservoir, while 31.6 km is the length of the loop trail.
Town history and historic surroundings
Bohosud z Lipna is mentioned in connection with the first reference to Lipno, in 1316. The Baroque chateau in Lipno formerly also had a chapel dedicated to St. Anne, which was consecrated in 1715. The town’s first mention and the consecration year of the chapel formerly belonging to the chateau are two distinct historical points of reference.
The site of the Staré Lipno hillfort is protected by a high, triple stone cross rampart; double to triple fortifications also survive on the western side. The late-medieval castle ruin of Buben is also located near Lipno, at the confluence of the Úlický potok and the Mže. The two references emphasize different features: the hillfort is notable for its fortifications, while Buben is notable for its location at the confluence.
