Hvozd offers several points to consider when planning a trip: a distinctive forest landscape, historic buildings and works of art, and a specifically named cycling route. Depending on whether nature, local history, or cycling is your main interest, you can explore the area through these three themes.

Landscape and Location

The village lies on a gently sloping plateau and is surrounded on three sides by a large, largely uninhabited area of the Manětín Forests. The reference to three sides describes a pronounced woodland setting, but not a complete enclosure. The village district of Hvozd lies in Manětínská Nature Park. To understand the area, distinguish between the terrain, the forest complex, and the connection to the nature park: the first two describe the surroundings, while the third describes the village district’s location within the nature park.

Local History and Architecture

Hvozd was first mentioned in writing in 1253. This date marks the first written mention, not necessarily the date of its founding. The Chapel of St. John the Baptist stands on the north side of the village green. It has a rectangular ground plan, a semicircular end, a gabled roof, and a roof turret. These features give a concrete picture of the architecture: the ground plan describes its shape, while the semicircular end and roof design add to its exterior appearance.

At the junction of the Bažantnice–Manětín road and the turnoff to Hodovíz stands a Baroque statue of the Archangel Michael battling the devil. The statue was erected in 1772 by Terezie Lažanská, née z Lisova. Both the subject depicted and the historical attribution are thus identified, helping to put the sculpture in context. The chapel and statue offer different points of interest: a building on the village green, and a Baroque depiction at a road junction.

Hradiště Vyšehrad

Another historical landmark lies in the cadastral area of Hodoviz in the municipality of Hvozd. There you will find the small, square hillfort of Hradiště Vyšehrad on a rocky spur. The surviving stone ramparts are 0.5 to 1 meter high. The location, square shape, and height of the ramparts describe different aspects of the site: where it is, its ground plan, and a specific feature of its surviving fortifications. A rocky spur is a projecting landform; together with the stone ramparts, it gives a clearer picture of this place.

Cycling the “Baroko II” Route

For cyclists, “Baroko II” provides a specific route-planning reference: the 37-kilometer cycling route passes through Hodovíz, the “Hvozd bus” section, and Dražeň. These points help you recognize the route when planning; the total distance indicates how long it is. If cycling is important to your trip, you can compare this distance with your own daily plans and check the current route before setting off.

Find a Hotel Based on Your Interests

If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Hvozd, start by deciding what interests you most: the forest landscape, architectural and art history, or cycling. This can help you decide whether the features described here match your travel interests. Then compare specific hotel offers using the details that matter for your own travel plans.
