Bor U Tachova offers a range of reasons to visit: religious architecture, castle history and parkland. Loreta, the Church of St. Nicholas and the Chapel of St. John the Baptist reflect different building histories. The castle was remodelled in the Romantic style and has a chapel with restored Renaissance paintings. For getting there, both cycle route 2207 and the E50 road are relevant.

Loreta: Foundation and Architecture

In 1668, Isabella von Götzen, née Trčková z Lípy, and her husband Zikmund Bedřich von Götzen founded Loreta in Bor. At the centre of the complex is the so-called Holy House, surrounded by four wings of vaulted ambulatories. This layout can be understood as a central element with four surrounding wings. Loreta is open to the public during the Loreto pilgrimage in September. If you are planning a visit, check the pilgrimage dates and plan your trip for that period.

Castle, Churches and City Wall

At Bor Castle, guided tours introduce the public to the cultural value of the complex. The castle was shaped by an extensive Romantic-style remodelling in the first third of the 19th century. The Chapel of St. Lawrence in the castle contains restored Renaissance paintings. To understand the chronology, it is worth distinguishing between the remodelling, which dates to the first third of the 19th century, and the paintings, which are Renaissance works.

The Church of St. Nicholas also offers a clear comparison of different architectural styles: it is a Baroque building dating from 1737 to 1746 and has a Gothic tower. The dates refer to the church building, while the Gothic classification applies to the tower. At the former hospital in Bor stands a Gothic chapel dedicated to St. John the Baptist. Another surviving architectural feature is a fragment of the city wall in the northern part of Bor.

Parks in Bor

Bor Castle Park was created around the second half of the 18th century and is a landscape park with Romantic elements. Seven stations offer opportunities to learn, enjoy a pleasant pause and go for walks. The stations thus bring together different aspects of a visit to the park: learning, relaxing and walking.

A naturalistic landscape park covering just under 40 hectares lies on the southern outskirts of Bor. Groups and larger stands of old trees define the park, with meadows separating them. The landscape can be described through its specific features: the trees, their arrangement and the meadows between them.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

Cycle route 2207 leads directly to Bor and runs through Borovany, Bor, Lužná, Labuť, former Bohuslav, Hošťka and former Nová Knížecí Huť. By road, Bor lies on the E50 along the Plzeň–Stříbro–Bor–Rozvadov route. When choosing Bor as your place to stay, you can therefore consider the cycle route and the road connection as different ways of getting there.
