Vlckovice: Rocks, Hiking Trails and Village Traditions
Accommodation in Vlckovice
Vlckovice offers several specific reasons to visit: hiking trails, Studenské skály south of the village, and cultural attractions. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, it helps to decide first what you are most interested in: a hiking route, a geological feature, or a local tradition?
Hiking Trails and Rocky Landscape
Studenské skály lies about 2 km south of Vlckovice. A marked tourist trail leads to this geological site. The rocks form a rocky defile, which is about 20 m high in places. A defile is a narrow passage shaped by rocks; the height given describes individual sections, not the formation as a whole. As trail conditions can change, check the situation before your visit.
The mountains surrounding Vlckovice include Studený vrch. The Mladkov–Letohrad route via Studený vrch passes through Vlckovice and then climbs the mountain. It is also suitable for cycling. A red-marked hiking trail also passes through the village. For the 2026 edition of the “Toulání kolem Orlice” event, a 40 km route passes through Vlckovice. The destinations are in different directions: Studenské skály lies south of the village; Studený vrch is part of the surrounding mountain landscape and is the destination of the climb on the Mladkov–Letohrad route after it passes through Vlčkovice.
Village Traditions and Culture
Every year on 30 April, residents gather in Vlckovice’s village square to decorate and raise the maypole. The “Stavění máje” tradition therefore takes place on a fixed date in the calendar, which you can bear in mind when planning your trip.
The wayside atonement cross “Smírčí kříž ve Vlčkovicích” is located in the cadastral area of Vlčkovice u Mladkova. It bears an inscription with the year 1750; the lower part features a relief of a skull and crossed bones. If you would like to visit the cross, check the local conditions.
Services are held in the Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on the second Saturday of each month: at 17:00 during standard time and at 19:00 during daylight saving time. Check the current date with the parish before visiting.
Dates to Bear in Mind When Planning Your Trip
The dates differ: the maypole tradition takes place every year on 30 April, the 40 km route is part of the 2026 edition, and the services are held on the second Saturday of each month. If you are planning your trip around the event, check the dates for the relevant edition.
