Úhřetice combines local history with a setting between two rivers. Two ponds on the western edge of the village and marked local cycling routes add to the picture. If you are planning a hotel stay, you can assess the destination based on whether you are more interested in local history, archaeological periods, waterways or cycling.

History and Village Character

The first written mention of Úhřetice dates from 1392. The village remained part of the Rychmburk estate until 1586. After 1586, Markéta Trčková z Lípy founded a substantial manor farm on the southeastern edge of the village. It also included the former Úhřetice Castle, which she had built for possible stays in Úhřetice. The castle burned down in 1807 and was not rebuilt. The dates mark different events: 1392 is the first written mention, and 1807 is the year the castle burned down. In the village center stands the Chapel of Saint Wenceslas, the only more prominent building in the village. The castle is located in an area that is not open to the public; check access locally before visiting.

Archaeological Context

The archaeological area “Tuněchody Brickworks” is classified as a significant site in category ÚAN I. It lies around the Tuněchody brickworks, mainly to the south, southeast and east; the cadastral areas listed also include Úhřetice. The area is associated with the Silesian-Platěnice culture, the La Tène period, the Roman Imperial period, the transition from the Early to the High Middle Ages, the High Middle Ages and the Late Middle Ages. This archaeological context offers a different perspective from the dated history of the village. The area should be distinguished from the brickworks itself, which was declared a cultural monument in 2000.

Riverside Setting and Cycling

Úhřetice lies between the Novohradka and Chrudimka rivers. The municipality is on the left bank of the Novohradka and the right bank of the Chrudimka; two ponds lie on the western edge of the village. The rivers describe the area’s geographic position, while the ponds provide a separate point of reference on its western edge. Marked local cycling routes pass through Úhřetice. Markings and routes may change; check them before setting out on a bike ride. The cycling routes thus complement the landscape with a specific activity. The Chrudim–Holice railway line runs along the southern edge of Úhřetice.
