Jeníkov combines a village history that is still visible today with a varied moorland landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Jeníkov, these two main features can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: the village’s historic settlement patterns, former livelihoods, and the Chapel of St. Wenceslas take center stage in the local streetscape; Louky v Jeníkově adds moorland meadows and diverse habitats to the picture. The surrounding landscape also provides practical guidance for planning your trip.

Settlement History and Former Livelihoods

Jeníkov developed as a forest-strip village, with farmsteads on both sides of the road. The original buildings, including smallholders’ cottages, remain visible in the center. The historic village layout also includes the separate settlement group “Na dolním konci” on the so-called village green. It consists of houses belonging to former landless residents. The inhabitants’ main historic livelihoods were foothill agriculture, pottery, and weaving. The village history therefore encompasses both its settlement pattern and its agriculture and crafts.

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas

The Chapel of St. Wenceslas stands in the center of Jeníkov. It dates from 1900 and was built on the site of an earlier wooden bell tower; it was consecrated in 2010. The chapel has been reconstructed and features a wrought-iron fence by artistic blacksmith Pavel Jekl. If you would like to attend a service in the chapel, please check in advance whether services are held there and when.

The municipality also offers an online tour of the exhibition “Jeníkov v proměnách času.” The exhibition is dated August 15, 2022. The digital tour complements the historic buildings in the village center with another perspective on Jeníkov’s history.

Moorland Meadows and the Surrounding Landscape

The Louky v Jeníkově area includes transitional mires, calcareous-poor hollows in the mires, tall-sedge stands, wet marsh thistle meadows and wet meadows with meadowsweet, intermittently wet purple moor-grass meadows, and Nardus grasslands. Wet sedge communities in the moorland meadows with reeds lie on the site of former ponds that had silted up. The range of habitats extends from mires and hollows to wet meadows and Nardus grasslands.

A hill near Jeníkov offers views in the direction of Kameničky, Žákova hora, and Devět skal near Herálec. The landscape information combines a specific elevation with views in several directions, complementing the village history with a sense of the surrounding terrain.
