Raná lies at an altitude of 485 metres on the Raná stream, which was also called Černý potok and Dolský potok. The village was first mentioned in writing in 1349; at that time, it belonged to the Rychmburk estate. The village’s history provides specific points of reference for understanding a stay here: the development of the farmsteads, the building phases of the Church of St. James the Greater, and the stream’s former use. The stream is a recurring point of reference, linking Raná’s location with the former mills and the farmsteads in Oldřetice.

Settlement Pattern and Landscape

Raná’s historic settlement pattern was shaped by large timber-framed farmsteads along the road; masonry farmsteads were added later. The shift from timber-framed to masonry construction offers a way to trace the village’s development over time. In Oldřetice, larger, enclosed agricultural farmsteads have been preserved along the stream. The road in Raná and the stream in Oldřetice mark different spatial reference points for the settlement patterns. Raná and the districts of Oldřetice and Medkovy Kopce are set in unspoilt countryside, giving them a distinctive atmosphere.

The Church of St. James the Greater

The Church of St. James the Greater complex is located in the central part of Raná on a slight rise. The church was originally Gothic and is documented as early as 1350. It was remodelled in the Baroque style in 1718; later, it acquired its Neo-Gothic appearance. Its Gothic origins and Neo-Gothic form therefore belong to different periods, while the Baroque remodelling marks another stage in its architectural history. Original historic wall paintings were discovered inside the church. The complex includes an enclosure wall around the cemetery, a mortuary dating from the early 18th century, and a masonry bell tower built in 1835.

Chapel and the Stream’s Former Use

Another dated building is the Chapel of the Virgin Mary in the village square, which dates from 1894. This date adds a 19th-century building to the medieval and early modern landmarks in the village’s history. Three water-powered grain mills and a sawmill once operated on the Raná stream. The mills and sawmill thus add a perspective on former work and production on the water to the village’s history.
