Dřenice: Local History, Streams and Sports
Accommodation in Dřenice
Dřenice brings together historic places of remembrance, waterways and local sporting activities. This offers several themes to consider when planning your trip: the history of the village, the landscape around Na Hrázi and recurring club competitions. Dřenice was first mentioned in writing in 1381. If you are looking for accommodation, these themes can help you decide what interests you during a stay in Dřenice.
History and Places of Remembrance
According to historical sources, the founding of Dřenice is attributed to Count Dřeň, who lived in the part of the village now called Na Hrázi. The first written mention in 1381 and the traditional account of its founding are two distinct points of reference in the village’s history: one is a dated mention, the other a historical tradition.
The memorial to the victims of the First and Second World Wars is a sandstone monument featuring a plaque bearing names, a relief, a flaming heart and a cross. The back records its unveiling on 18 August 1946. The dedication states the purpose of the memorial, while the inscription records a specific post-war date. The material, design and inscription each offer a different clue to understanding this place of remembrance.
Smaller structures also form part of the village’s historic character. The wooden bell tower in Dřenice houses an original bell that is still in working order. The chapel in the Na Hrázi area was built by residents of the municipality at the end of the 19th century and stands above the confluence of the Bylanka and Markovický streams. The Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk is south of the village, at a crossroads near Na Hrázi. The chapels thus bring together architectural history, dedication and specific location details.
Streams and the Local Landscape
The Bylanka stream enters the municipal area of Dřenice from the south. It flows through a shallow valley and then runs north through the built-up area before leaving the municipal area. This sequence—from its southern entry through the shallow valley to its northerly course—describes the stream in relation to the terrain and settlement.
The historic landscape around Na Hrázi includes the former pond dam, where the Bylanka and Markovický streams meet. Another notable local landscape feature is the source of the Dřenička, a small stream. These references to water differ in scale: the course of the Bylanka concerns the municipal area, while the confluence and source identify individual landscape features.
Sports and Club Activities
The SK Dřenice sports complex includes a grass football pitch, changing rooms with a clubhouse and snack bar, sanitary facilities, a summer dance area and a renovated tennis court. Individual facilities may change. If you plan to visit the complex, it is therefore advisable to check in advance whether the facility you are interested in is available for use.
Several football tournaments for men’s or veterans’ teams are held each year at the SK Dřenice sports ground. The Dřenice fishing club holds angling competitions in several categories at the municipal fire pond several times a year. Football tournaments and angling competitions are two distinct recurring club activities: the former take place at the sports ground, while the latter are held at the fire pond. They complement the historical and landscape themes with a glimpse of local club life.
Dřenice therefore offers several points of interest for planning your trip: the village’s documented history, the war memorial and chapels, the streams around Na Hrázi, and the sporting activities of local clubs. You can decide which of these will be most important during your stay based on your interests.
