Pomezí: Churches, History and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Pomezí
For a stay in Pomezí, local history, church architecture and regional routes offer different points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these themes can help shape your plans: Would you like to focus more on historic buildings or include regional routes? The cycling routes have different points of reference; trains and buses provide additional options for planning your journey.
Townscape and settlement pattern
Pomezí’s settlement pattern is that of a Waldhufendorf, a type typical of the Vysočina region. Detached farmsteads lie on both sides of the stream valley and the road. If you are interested in rural settlement patterns, the term Waldhufendorf describes this layout. Unlike the history of the churches, it does not describe a single building, but rather how the farmsteads are arranged in the village.
Churches and historic details
St. George’s Church is a protected cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It is mentioned in connection with the Diocese of Litoměřice in 1349; it was probably built in the Gothic style. Gothic architectural elements have been preserved, while the interior has Baroque and, in particular, Rococo features. The 1349 reference and the church’s probable Gothic construction describe different aspects of its history. A bell dating from 1511 hangs in the tower; stone angel figures dating from 1870 stand at the entrance to the church cemetery.
The Marian Chapel in Pomezí has a different, more recent history: a nearby fire damaged it in August 1924. It was repaired in the 1930s and consecrated on September 12, 1937. The damage, repairs and consecration mark different stages in its history and provide a distinct chronological point of reference alongside the early mention of St. George’s Church.
In the area around Pomezí, the forest chapel of Panna Maria Zázračná is also located in the Balda Forest. If you plan to visit, check access and opening arrangements locally.
Cycling routes and regional connections
For cyclists, two route references should be distinguished. The signposted regional road cycling route 4023 runs through Balda, Pomezí, Květná and Čistá. Cycling route 4102 runs around the site of the former fortress in Pomezí and through an agricultural area. The routes can be compared by their points of reference: 4023 names several places, while 4102 focuses on the former fortress site and the agricultural area.
There is a train connection from Pomezí on the Svitavy–Polička–Skuteč line. Bus connections run between Polička and Rohozná, and between Polička and Svitavy.
