Mostek – Natural and Cultural History
Accommodation in Mostek
When planning a trip to Mostek, nature and cultural history go hand in hand. The Hemže-Mýtkov Nature Reserve defines the natural landscape, while the reconciliation cross, stone cross and castle history offer tangible historical points of interest. The stories range from a medieval monument to a castle whose construction began in 1724.
Nature on the Edge of the Tichá Orlice
On the southern edge of Mostek’s cadastral area, where the municipality extends to the Tichá Orlice, lies the protected Hemže-Mýtkov Nature Reserve. It encompasses south-facing slopes above the river. Debris forests with diverse woodland flora grow on marl outcrops; the adjacent oxbow lakes of the Tichá Orlice are also home to molluscs and amphibians. Thus, both the wooded slopes and the habitats along the oxbow lakes are among the natural features described here.
A waterfall may appear in the gorge within the reserve when water levels are higher, so whether you can see it depends on the water flow. For cyclists, cycle route 4061 provides a specific route: from Choceň, it offers access to Hemže-Mýtkov and continues towards Česká Třebová. If you plan to use this cycle route, check current route conditions before setting off.
Cultural Monuments and Local History
The Mostek reconciliation cross stands between Mostek and Brandýs nad Orlicí, on Road 312, about 250 metres beyond Mostek in the direction of Brandýs nad Orlicí. It is considered a rare surviving medieval monument associated with a tragic local event and is protected as a cultural monument. The approximate distance and stated direction are useful for finding it.
Kříž v Mostku is a stone cross on a four-sided stone plinth. The back of the plinth records its erection in 1842 and restorations in 1881, 1894, 1923, 1937, 1970 and 2008. The sequence of dates distinguishes the cross’s construction from its later restorations and brings several periods in its history as a monument into focus.
Opposite the former grocery store is a capital from the castle, construction of which began in 1724. The remaining ruins of the castle begun near Mostek were dismantled by farmers from Mostek in 1874. The start of construction and the removal of the remains thus mark two distinct points in the castle’s history: its beginnings in the 18th century and the later demolition of the remains in the 19th century.
Historic Places in Sudličkova Lhota
In Sudličkova Lhota, the Sudličkova distillery is housed in the rooms of a medieval manor house. The earliest surviving records of alcohol distillation there date from the 15th century. At this site, the present-day distillery and the long history of distillation come together. If you are planning a visit, check visitor arrangements before you arrive.
A medieval agricultural farmstead dating from the 14th century is also located in Sudličkova Lhota; it included a manor house. The farmstead’s history adds an agricultural dimension to the evidence of the area’s architectural and cultural heritage. Along with the information about the distillery, it offers another historical perspective on Sudličkova Lhota, without conflating its sites with the monuments in Mostek.
