Chvaletice lies in the northwestern foothills of the Železné hory National Geopark. The ridge of the Železné hory ends here; beyond the Elbe stretches the Východočeská tabule. The local rocks bear witness to two seas of different ages, volcanic activity, folds formed by mountain-building processes, and a significant accumulation of ores. Geology is therefore a tangible theme for a stay: cycling-route stops and viewpoints showcase the landscape, while walks along the banks of the Elbe offer another way to spend time outdoors.

Cycling Routes, Views and the Banks of the Elbe

MAGEO is a 29-kilometre geological cycling route with 13 information panels. Its stops in Chvaletice include Chvaletická vyhlídka and Chvaletice railway station. The panels give the ride a geological focus; the named stops connect the route in town with a viewpoint and the railway station. The total length of 29 kilometres helps you gauge the scale of the ride. Check the current signage and surface conditions before setting out.

A cycling route reaches Chvaletice via an underpass at the railway station and continues from there along the river to Týnec nad Labem. In Chvaletice, you can walk along the banks of the Elbe. Chvaletická vyhlídka offers wide-ranging views across the landscape; in good visibility, Sněžka is also clearly visible. Cycling, a riverside walk and a viewpoint offer different ways to spend your time; the possibility of seeing Sněžka in the distance depends on visibility.

Geology and Finding Your Way Around

At the western edge of old Chvaletice, in Hornická čtvrť, two information panels stand beside the road from Chvaletice to Horušice. From there, you can enjoy wide-ranging views of the Chvaletice geological site. Check the signage when you arrive.

The geological site itself is accessible only with special permission because it includes a military area, a quarry and private property. Access restrictions may change. Check the current conditions locally before attempting to enter.

Hornická Čtvrť: Mining History and Cultural Landmarks

Mining destroyed large parts of the original settlement of Chvaletice; Hornická Čtvrť was built for the miners. The district’s protected buildings include the Protestant church and the former Masaryk Primary School. The Neo-Renaissance Protestant church was built and consecrated in 1882 and is protected as a cultural landmark. The former Masaryk Primary School was completed in 1930 to a design by the architect Řepa and is protected as an immovable cultural landmark.

A Jan Hus monument stands in a meadow below the Protestant church. It commemorates the 500th anniversary of Jan Hus’s execution. In Hornická Čtvrť, you will encounter several different historical themes: the creation of a district for miners, religious architecture, a former school building and the commemoration of Jan Hus. The construction years of the church and school provide two points of reference for the history of local architecture.
