Bučina: Churches, Rose Meadow and Memorial
Accommodation in Bučina
Bučina offers several reasons to stay: two churches with different building histories, the Růžový palouček rose meadow with a memorial, Cycle Route 4229, which runs through the village, and regularly held cultural events.
Churches and Building History
The Protestant church in Bučina was built in 1786 and has been a cultural monument of the Czech Republic since 2003. The Catholic filial church of St. James the Greater is located near the village green. It was built in the Gothic style in 1375, in the 14th century. After a fire in 1872, it had to be rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style. These churches therefore have different building histories: the Protestant church combines a construction date with a later designation as a monument; the history of St. James brings together its medieval origins, the fire and the reconstruction. The years 1375 and 1786 are more than four centuries apart. Gothic and Neo-Gothic are also not the same: the first term refers to the original building phase, the second to the reconstruction after the fire. This makes it possible to consider the churches’ age, their later changes and their monument status as distinct aspects of their history.
Růžový palouček: Roses and Remembrance
The Růžový palouček offers a landscape and memorial perspective alongside the churches. The meadow has long been covered with rose bushes; the roses found there do not grow elsewhere in the surrounding area. They are called French roses and are botanically known as Rosa gallica. The Růžový palouček was declared a cultural monument in 1989. A memorial designed by A. Metelák was unveiled there in 1921, bearing the names of exiles who went abroad. The dates refer to two different events: the unveiling of the memorial in 1921 and the designation as a cultural monument in 1989. This place brings together a distinctive rose meadow and remembrance of exiles—a different way of encountering culture and history than through the churches’ building phases.
