Zlate Hory: Gold Panning and Mining History
Accommodation in Zlate Hory
If you are looking for a hotel in Zlate Hory, you can plan your stay around the local themes of gold extraction and mining history. The open-air museum, town museum, archaeological site and educational trail each offer a different perspective, ranging from gold panning and historic mills to exhibitions, traces in the landscape and a circular route. This lets you decide in advance which of these aspects is most important to your trip.
Gold panning and mills at the open-air museum
Zlatorudné mlýny is a medieval open-air mining museum on the Olešnice River near the municipality of Zlaté Hory, in the Údolí ztracených štol. Visitors can try gold panning there using the pans provided. Check the current availability of the activity and pans before your trip.
Zlatorudné mlýny includes fully functional replicas of water-powered gold mills from the 14th century. One is a stamp mill that crushes gold ore. The pan and stamp mill represent two different stages of work: washing material and crushing ore. This brings together a hands-on activity and a depiction of historic mining technology.
Mining history in the town and its cultural heritage
The Městské muzeum Zlaté Hory is housed in the Stará pošta. The building is considered the finest structure in the town's conservation area. It was built in 1698 as the first post office in what was then Silesia. The museum covers local gold and ore extraction; its exhibits also include an extensive mineral collection and models of medieval and more recent mine galleries. The building thus brings together the history of the former post office and the mining history presented in the museum.
Edelštejn in Zlaté Hory is classified as an important archaeological site. This archaeological connection differs from the town museum's collections and models, offering another perspective on the town's cultural heritage.
Circular route and visiting conditions
The Zlatohorská hornická naučná stezka is a 16-kilometre circular route that starts and ends in Zlaté Hory. There are 15 educational stops along the way. The route's length and the number of stops give you concrete points of reference for planning. Check trail conditions before setting out.
Along the route, you can see depressions formed by collapsed mine galleries. There are also piles of stones left by people who washed material from gold-bearing streams. These traces in the landscape offer a different view of mining from the reconstructed mills and mine models: here, visible changes shape the scene, while there, exhibits and replicas do.
Advance booking is required for visits to the Poštovní štola. Check the visiting arrangements before your trip and plan to book ahead. The Poštovní štola was declared a cultural monument in 1994.
