Vidnava can be explored through several distinct interests: historic architecture, the settlement exhibition, and nature in the Vidnavské mokřiny Nature Reserve. This variety is useful when planning your trip if you want to choose a focus based on your own interests. Tangible traces of the city’s history sit alongside nature observation and named routes, offering different perspectives on the town.

Historic Townscape: Square and Renaissance Chateau

The remains of Vidnava’s late medieval town fortifications, dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, form the natural boundaries of the urban heritage zone. The original square retains paving made of river pebbles and two columns bearing statues of saints. Vidnava’s Renaissance chateau dates from the third quarter of the 16th century. It is a detached, single-storey building with two square corner towers. Sgraffito is visible on the towers; it was discovered during restoration work in 1971. Here, you can see both features of the urban heritage zone and the clearly defined architectural form of a single Renaissance building.

Churches from Different Periods

The Church of St. Catherine has a valuable 13th-century portal. A date inscribed on a marble block gives 1537 as the year its imposing tower, with ramparts and loopholes, was built; in 1883, it was reduced to a height of 7.5 metres. The Church of St. Francis of Assisi was built at the end of the 19th century as part of the ecclesiastical grammar school of the time. It invites visitors to pause and reflect quietly, as well as to contemplate the town’s spiritual and cultural heritage. The churches therefore offer different points of interest: St. Catherine features distinctive details in its portal and tower, while St. Francis of Assisi combines architectural history with an invitation to reflection.

Vidnava’s Settlement Exhibition

The settlement exhibition is housed in the restored townhouse Dům partnerství at Sokolská 12 and is aimed primarily at tourists. Its themes include history, geomorphology, and zoology, as well as a reconstruction of a black medieval kitchen and notable figures from Vidnava and the surrounding area. Geomorphology draws attention to the forms of the landscape, while zoology focuses on wildlife. Alongside local history, the exhibition therefore offers natural-history perspectives and features personalities from the town and its surroundings.

Vidnavské mokřiny: Wetland and Nature Observation

The Vidnavské mokřiny Nature Reserve was designated on 10 April 1996 by order of the Jeseník District Office, 96/ŽP/891. Rare aquatic plants, including round-leaved sundew, grow there. Ponds, pools, and marshy wet meadows define the area. It invites visitors to go for walks, sit by the water, observe nature, and fish. Each of these activities offers a different focus: walking, taking a break by the water, observing nature, and fishing are distinct ways to experience the wetland.
