Vlčice is a destination where architectural history and landscape each stand out as subjects in their own right. Notable historical landmarks include the parish Church of St. Bartholomew, Vlčice Castle and its park; the municipality is also shaped by a variety of landscapes. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Vlčice, you can first consider whether architecture, the history of the castle or nature will be the main focus of your visit.

Landscape and Nature

The three cadastral areas of Vlčice cover a total of 1,865 hectares. The northeastern part belongs to the gently rolling Vidnava Lowland; the rest of the area forms the foothills of the Rychlebské hory.

A distinctive natural feature lies in Dolní les, in the cadastral area of Vlčice. There are extensive reed beds there. Marsh harriers nest regularly, and mute swans have also nested there in recent years. Reed warblers, reed buntings and common grasshopper warblers occur in association with stands of reeds and bulrushes. Nature enthusiasts can therefore view the landscape from a different perspective than that of architectural history: here, the reed beds and the bird species associated with them take center stage.

Church, Castle and Park History

Vlčice is one of the oldest municipalities in the Jeseník area; a document from 1248 is cited as evidence. The parish Church of St. Bartholomew is an example of Baroque architecture from the first half of the 18th century; it was remodeled in the Baroque style between 1732 and 1742. A statue of St. John of Nepomuk dates from the second half of the 18th century.

Vlčice Castle was a former manor house dating from the second half of the 16th century and stands on the site of an earlier Gothic water castle. It underwent a major remodeling in the Empire style in 1829. Compared with the church, the castle’s history reaches back to an earlier period, before the 19th-century remodeling took place.

The English park around the castle was laid out by František Schaffgotsch in 1844–1845. The surviving castle park is now smaller than its original area of more than 40 hectares and still contains many interesting old trees. A partially preserved pond in the park in front of the castle, together with the moat, was part of the defensive system of the former water castle. The castle park thus brings together the later 19th-century landscaping and an element of the site’s earlier defensive function.
