Velké Kunětice can be explored through several distinctive local landmarks: the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, the castle complex, the lime kilns and the cycling routes. The landscape within the cadastral area is also clearly defined: in the north, it slopes down to the plain along the Nisa, while mountain foothills extend into the south. This offers different options for planning your trip, from local history and lime burning to cycling.

Church and castle: historic highlights

The Church of Our Lady of the Snows is a landmark of Velké Kunětice. It was formerly dedicated to Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia. A wall with two entrances surrounds the cemetery by the church: the eastern entrance faces the village, while the other is on the north side. Its former dedication and separate entrances add specific details about the surroundings to the church’s history.

The castle complex consists of two residential buildings and utility buildings of different ages. The northern residential building dates back to a medieval foundation, while the western one is Neoclassical. The cardinal directions are particularly useful for understanding the architecture: the medieval foundation is in the north, and the Neoclassical design is in the west.

The fortress, castle and remains of the park are open to the public by prior arrangement or during events. Check in advance whether a visit is possible, as arrangements may change.

Landscape and early local history

The 981-hectare cadastral area of Velké Kunětice slopes gently down in its northern part, along the state border, to the plain by the Nisa. In the southern part, the northern foothills of the Sokolský hřbet extend into the Rychlebské hory.

Velké Kunětice was first mentioned in a written record in 1284. In the late 15th century, there were limestone quarries in Velké Kunětice. These two dates trace the story from the first written mention to the later history of limestone extraction.

Lime kilns and cycling routes

Two unique 19th-century lime kilns stand in the centre of the village, right beside a green-marked hiking trail. A path leads from the kilns to a partially flooded marble mine, where the raw material for the kilns was extracted. The path thus connects the lime kilns in the village centre with the mine where the material originated.

Marked cycle route 6041 runs from Javorník via Vidnava to Velké Kunětice. The regional cycling route in the Jesenicko-Nysa area passes through Sławniowice, Velké Kunětice, Rokliny, Kaltenštejn, Zelená Hora, Vápenná and Žulová.

If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Velké Kunětice, you can start by choosing the focus of your trip: the history of the church and castle, the lime kilns or cycling. You can then check a specific hotel offer for your travel dates.
